Official r/NFL Week 13 Power Rankings

2023.12.05 20:03 NFLPowerRankers Official r/NFL Week 13 Power Rankings

Welcome to week 13 of the official NFL Power Rankings! In a week featuring two overtime games, the Pack are back on their back-to-back-to-back HOF ish, and the Niners' weapons couldn't be stopped by all of the tush pushes in the world. Two more starting quarterbacks went down, Saints fans came to the same Carr conclusion Josh McDaniels did while the Patriots smash through floor after floor. Oh, and is this Jake Browning guy for real or what? Discuss! 32/32 Reporting
# Team Δ Record Comment
1. 49ers +3 9-3 The 49ers ended the first quarter with a total of -6 yards on the first two drives, then proceeded to score a td on the next 6 consecutive drives, en route to a 42-19 victory. Brock Purdy threw for 314 yards and 4 tds and McCaffrey became the first 49ers RB to eclipse 1k rushing yards since Frank Gore in 2014. The defensive game plan to contain Jalen Hurts was executed to perfection, the team tallied 46 total pressures and 3 sacks. The team looks ahead to another match against the Seahawks on Sunday in Santa Clara.
2. Ravens -- 9-3 Steelers lost. Browns lost. Chiefs lost. Jags lost. Oh, and we got to sit back and watch the Joseph Vincent Flacco throw two touchdowns before a timely int to make him 19-3 against the Browns all time. Perfect bye week.
3. Eagles -2 10-2 Well, that sucked. Yes, the Eagles are banged up in a couple key positions, they’re in the middle of an absolute gauntlet of a 5 game stretch, and they had a rest disadvantage, but the players and coaches won’t make excuses, because that’s what losers do. Next up, Sunday night in Dallas.
4. Cowboys +1 9-3 This week couldn't have gone better if it was scripted. Dallas showed that they can handle business against a competitive team, the defense got a wake-up call game, and Philly lost. A win next week puts Dallas on top of the division and in the running for the one seed. With that in mind, if anyone has contact info for Jerry Jones or Mike McCarthy, I will put on an Italian Flag hat, stand way to close to the sideline, and do my very best to antagonize Eagles players into an ejection for a very reasonable rate. However, I will charge extra if its Jordan Davis.
5. Dolphins +1 9-3 Week 13 was a terrific week for the Dolphins! We took care of business against the Commanders, and surprising upsets of the Chiefs and Jaguars resulted in us being the #1 seed in the AFC. Tua looked great as usual, Tyreek was sensational as usual to the tune of 156 yards and 2 TDs, and the defense continued its tear holding Sam Howell to his lowest passing yards of the season. Andrew Van Ginkel, the player replacing budding star edge rusher Jaelan Phillips, was a star against Washington. 6 pressures, 2 batted balls, 3 stops, and 1 pick 6 was the stat stuffing day he put up against the Commanders. Listed as PFF's #6 edge rusher, he's going to make a team very happy as he is a free agent at the end of the year, and we can't afford him.
6. Chiefs -3 8-4 You would think the entire world was ending because of a regular season loss that put the Chiefs in 3rd place in the conference. At this point it would be silly to act like there aren't any concerns with this team. It would be sillier to act like this season is completely lost at this moment. The truth is that the entire NFL, with the exception of a healthy 49ers has looked poor at times this season. Rarely are the Chiefs fortunate for being in the AFC but it does feel that way right now. Trust the process, win or lose we can cry together come February.
7. Lions -- 9-3 The Detroit Lions have clinched consecutive winning seasons for only the second time this century, beating the New Orleans Saints 33-28 to improve to 9-3 and match their win total from last year. While it was not the smoothest ride to a win, luckily this is not college football and Detroit does not need to overcome name-bias and style points to “prove” themselves worthy; they need to win, and win they did. The Lions had spells of both brilliance and embarrassment on in all phases, however the good (Sam LaPorta & Jack Fox) outweighed the bad (coverage of Chris “ball-magnet” Olave and defending Taysom Hill's athleticism) enough to pull out the victory in a tough away environment. Next, Detroit heads to Chicago, looking to inch closer to what would be the first NFCN title in franchise history.
8. Texans +3 7-5 It was all about the D in Houston on Sunday. Will Anderson Jr. had his breakout game with 8 QB pressures and 2 sacks to go along with a tipped pass and a blocked-ish punt. That tipped pass found itself into the hand of the other #3 overall pick on the Texans defense, Derrick Stingley Jr. for the first of his two interceptions on the day. That now makes 3 games in a row with a Stingley INT (even if one was ref aided). Desmond King had what many thought was a forced fumble return for a touchdown, only to be called back for forward progress, and Jimmie Ward iced the game with an endzone pick. And even with all of that going for the defense, the player of the game was without a doubt Mr. Nico Collins and his 9 catch-191 yd day topped off with a TD reception. Unfortunately, this game cost the Texans Tank Dell for the rest of the year with a broken fibula while doing some run blocking for a Pierce TD. The next man up mentality that’s been present all year is going to need to keep up moving into the homestretch of the playoff race.
9. Jaguars -1 8-4 Fuck.
10. Bills -1 6-6 I thought we had some good moments, but the bye week simply outplayed us in all phases
11. Browns -1 7-5 The Browns still have playoff hopes however so do two other teams in the division. Of the Ravens and Bengals could lose it would be greatly appreciated. Flacco started, fresh off the practice squad. He started well but the Rams offense was just too much for the Browns D. The Browns will host the Jags next week, possibly without Lawrence. Bad year for QBs.
12. Colts +3 7-5 The Colts winning on a thrilling walk-off overtime TD in Nashville as part of a four-game winning streak and season sweep of the Titans? I think I've seen this film before… Indy scored off a blocked punt, then forced and recovered a rare punter fumble on the next one, leading to the firing of Titans special teams coordinator Craig Aukerman. Gardner Minshew threw for over 300 yards and two TDs, and only turned it over once. Michael Pittman had 105 yards and the game-winning score on 11 catches. Alec Pierce had a breakout game with 3 catches for 100 yards and a score of his own. Coach of the Year candidate Shane Steichen has the Colts marching toward an unexpected playoff berth, with games remaining against the Bengals, Steelers, Falcons, Raiders and Texans.
13. Seahawks +2 6-6 The offense was unstoppable. The defense was swiss cheese. I don't know what finally clicked in the offensive philosophy of this team, but the Seahawks actually utilized DK Metcalf like the alpha wide receiver he is, and to incredible results. Tyler Lockett looks like he has lost.... something. Micah Parsons and the Cowboys DL dominated the Seahawks front, and Geno Smith still played absolutely lights out. The offense was awesome. The defense, however, couldn't stop a nosebleed. Dak and Ceedee killed Seattle's defense all night, with Bobby Wagner and Devin Bush looking lost out there. The tackling needs to improve. It all needs to improve. Thursday night was an incredible game, and the Seahawks are going to regret letting the win slip away.
14. Rams +3 6-6 Don't look now, but this Rams team is rolling. Winners of 3 straight, they just scored 35+ points in back to back weeks for the first time since 2018, and are finishing games strongly. The return of Kyren Williams is keeping teams honest and opening up things for Matt Stafford, who has 7 TDs and only 1 INT over the last 2 weeks. The saltier side of the fanbase has us at 8-4 if we had a kicker in week 7 and a backup QB in week 9, but being a cusp wildcard team is a reasonable success vs preseason expectations.
15. Broncos -2 6-6 Chalk pursues gold. The loser covets what the victor carries, and the miner leaves behind the slough aggravated from his quarry. For the Broncos, outcomes delineate ambition from delusion. The Texans are who we wished we were. And as pyrite shines well and fails to sell, so too shall our Broncos polish up clean, to little worth. Put another way, I feel like I'm halfway through a nice meal and look down to realize I'm eating with a plastic knife and fork. It doesn't change the fact I enjoyed the food, but I might ask for proper utensils before trying another course.
16. Packers +2 6-6 Step aside Taylor and Travis! Simone Biles and Jonathan Owens is the true NFL power couple. Combined, Biles and Owens have way more Olympic gold medals than Swift and Kelce, they have way more tackles, and Owens beat Kelce head-to-head this year! OK maybe Jonathan Owens had help from an ascendant Jordan Love this week, but Owens sure did have the clamps on Kelce on that last Hail Mary play! The best power couple in the NFL suddenly find themselves with a .500 record and 0 games against teams with a current winning record on their schedule. Who knows how far this young team can go?
17. Steelers -5 7-5 Steelers West came to play. It's as simple as that. The Cardinals just kept their cool and played their own brand of football. Steelers East could not get any sort of rhythm, and then the fragile injury recovery situation was infested by the injury bug again. It goes without saying, but Trubisky is going to be at the helm until probably close to the last week or two of the season. It wasn't losing a game that should have been an easy win that was the problem, it was losing the momentum, the consistency, the nascent emergence of the offense, health - you name it. This is a short week against another team that is easy to overlook in the Patriots, so success is far from guaranteed. Pittsburgh need to pick up the pieces yet again and find a way to rebuild this shaky Jenga tower they call a team and do it quick.
18. Bengals +1 6-6 Burrow vs Lawrence turned into Browning vs Beathard and you never want to see the other team's QB go down during the game, but the Bengals did what they had to do and made enough plays to survive in OT. Jake Browning had a career saving performance and turned the Bengals from a team who everyone thought should tank into a team that still has a shot at the playoffs.
19. Vikings -3 6-6 Justin Jefferson was activated off IR last week, so the big question coming out of the Vikings' bye week is: who will be throwing him the ball? Josh Dobbs, despite a four-interception disasterclass vs. the Bears? Nick Mullens, despite a peashooter arm? Jaren Hall, despite being a day three rookie? Aaron Rodgers, despite -- oh wait, he has to finish his Jets stint first.
20. Falcons +2 6-6 On Sunday, Bud Dupree led Atlanta's defensive charge against the Jets with two sacks, proving his training with Vic Beasley has paid dividends. Despite poor conditions and a poor field, MVP caliber play is becoming the standard with Jesse Bates, who intercepted his 5th of the season. Terry has proven himself in FA, but the jury is out on his drafting. Ridder continues to stand pat through the internet's venom, but there were baby steps made again. What would also help is getting Clark Phillips more playing time. It's unfortunate he played due to AJ's injury, but this is where the Falcons will find another Brent Grimes-esque type corner. Players can't truly develop off the field (Bijan's recent trajectory is exhibit A.) On the other side, unless he's planning on running hobbled for forever, Pitts should have taken the year off for his health. Not everyone can follow in their HOF father's footsteps and break a team record for consecutive games played like Jake Matthews just did. Next week Atlanta takes on the Bucs in Atlanta, in what feels like the 8th straight winnable game. If they're firing on all cylinders the Falcons can win, but if that was the case they'd be like 9-3 right now
21. Chargers -- 5-7 When LAC fans were asking for the team to go 6-0 down the stretch, the football gods might have taken things a little too literally and gave them that 6-0 as the score on Sunday. In what was almost certainly the most boring game by any team this season and on the short list of worst games I've ever watched, the Chargers defense took care of an inept Bailey Zappy offense, delivering their first shutout of the Staley era. The offense tried to spice it up by doing almost nothing so that, even in a shutout, you couldn't rest easy for the final minutes. Friggin jerks!
22. Saints -2 5-7 In 2021 the Saints let an assistant head coach leave. He inherited a Detroit Lions team toward the bottom of the league and began his head coaching career 0-11-1 before getting his first win against the Vikings. In 2023 his team his team is a strong threat every week, and while beating the Saints is just another number in the W column, it was surely satisfying. That man's name? Albert Einstein Rob Campbell. The Saints have not won a game since the first week of November, and while fans might look at their upcoming schedule and think there's some wins coming, the 2023 Saints are a rollercoaster.
23. Buccaneers -- 5-7 I want to use this opportunity to quote a reddit comment by a Panthers fan: "Nothing makes me more irrationally annoyed than when I remember that the Bucs, the team with the WORST WINNING PERCENTAGE IN NFL HISTORY, still have not one but TWO rings to show for it. One with one of the worst QBs to ever win a Super Bowl, then obviously the GOAT and friends temporarily bringing them out of their perpetual mediocrity. The next two closest teams in that stat to win a Bowl are the Jets and Saints, who both only have one. The Panthers, surprisingly, have the best all time winning percentage in the division with nothing to show for it. Life as a panthers fan is so fuckin miserable these days lol"
24. Raiders -- 5-7 No news is good news during the bye week.
25. Titans -- 4-8 The Titans lost to the Colts on Sunday making it the first time the Titans have been swept by the Colts since 2018. The Titans were able to hold onto the lead through the first half, but after injuries to Derrick Henry, Jeffery Simmons and most importantly, Ryan Stonehouse, the wheels fell off and they let the Colts back in the game. The injury to Ryan Stonehouse came on the second consecutive punt block by the Colts. Mike Vrabel made a rare move and fired Special Teams coordinator Craig Aukerman on Monday leaving the special teams unit in the hands of Tom Quinn.
26. Bears +1 4-8 It was a great week for the Bears' draft position thanks to the Cardinals' big win over the Steelers (well, big for the Bears anyway). Unfortunately, the Patriots continued to look very bad. It will be a tight race between them and the Panthers for pick #1, but the Bears are almost definitely picking in the top 2. Hey, wouldn't it be awesome for Carolina right now if they had their own pick or a Bonafide star WR like DJ Moore? Sadly for them, both are in Chicago.
27. Cardinals +3 3-10 “If playing football against the Steelers is sure to result in victory, then you must play!” Michael Bidwill said that, and I’d say he knows a little bit more about football than you do pal, because he invented it, and then he perfected it so that nobody could beat him on the gridiron. Then he used his football money to buy two of every position on the field. And then he herded them onto a field, and then he beat the crap out of every single one. And from that day forward any time there’s a player positioned in the center of the defense, it’s called a Mike! ….Unless it’s 3-4!
28. Giants +1 4-8 Giants fans didn't have to watch the Giants offense on Sunday, and they got to instead watch the Eagles get manhandled on primetime television. That sounds like a double win on the bye week to me.
29. Jets -3 4-8 You might say I'm reluctant to rank the Jets anywhere but 31st. Fire Joe Douglas.
30. Commanders -2 4-9 Are any fans of this franchise still able to feel even apathy for this organization? I might as well have been watching a comedy special with how much I just laughed at and continue to laugh at this franchise. I remember how angry I'd get as a kid when my stupid Cowboys fan neighbor kid would poke fun at me, and I'll admit I still owe akid from 6th grade $20 for when the Cowboys beat us. But now I just laugh along. I literally cheered for Tyreek Hill. "Go off on em 'Reek!" That's how little I care. Hopefully this season is just a parting gift from Mr. Snyder, and the Harris regime is planning to go gangbusters this offseason. As far as this ranker is concerned, not a single player, coach or employee of the organization should be safe from being dealt out or forced out. There is nothing worth preserving here.
31. Patriots -- 2-10 The Norway Maple is distinct from its popular cousins the Sugar, Red, and Silver Maples in that the former is not native to North America. It also grows so quickly and spreads so opportunistically that many label it invasive. It’s hard to pick my favorite punt of this game, but I am going to lean towards the 70 yarder from Bryce Baringer to flip field position at the end of the first quarter. It set a tone for a day that brought the kicking game to the forefront of the narrative. I mean, we could talk about the switch at QB, but since this game featured more than twice as many punts (15) as points (6), it would seem ridiculous to center the offense. Instead, I call your attention to Bryce and JK Scott. The former had a few nice moments, but was badly outplayed by the latter. Bryce had the aforementioned big-leg boom, and he also had a great kick downed at the 7 yard line in the third quarter. Unfortunately, JK was a man on fire, relentlessly pinning the locals inside their own 2o, and thrice sticking them behind their own 10. Baringer couldn’t really keep up, shanking one out of bounds at the 26 after kicking from the Chargers’ 48. It was that kind of day. I don’t mind the Norway Maples on the land I steward. Anything that grows fast and aggressive makes a great candidate for pollarding and harvesting as firewood, woodchips, or fencing.
32. Panthers -- 1-11 Hmm… Another loss, to be expected, but we actually looked alright in this close game against the Tampa Bay Bucs. Offense is still pretty lack luster with terrible pass blacking from the offensive line and wide receivers that refuse to get open consistently. The only bright spot was Chubba leading the run game with just over 100 yds. The defense looked ehh which is unlike them but at this point it doesn’t even matter. They play too hard for our offense to look JV quality every week. It sucks. We were actually in the game with an opportunity to drive down the field with a littler over 2 mins left in the game. On a much needed 4th and 1 to continue the drive, Bryce throws a pick. It looked like a terrible play call considering Chubba was cooking but what do we expect at this point? Like it just sucks. David T#pper had the worst press conference ever. It’s worth checking out if you were wondering about anything other than what the plan to fix the Carolina Panthers is. He sucks. It’s time we as Panther fans need to really try and get creative in our own brains about what the plan is for this team. We are in a real bad spot when T#pper really thinks he knows anything about what is needed for a good football team. It’s true scary hours out here for us (scary years is more like it). No draft pick. No offensive line. No wide receivers yet. Bryce is looking a bit scared which isn’t his fault but he still actually looks scared out there at times. We just have to make it to the off-season and hope Fitterer gets fired. Then we just hope and pray for some miracles. On to New Orleans. Cannot wait. Keep Pounding.

2023.12.05 17:16 stonescoldtakes NFL Recap: 11/28/23 - 12/04/23

Layout:
— Individual Team News + Stone’s Cold Takes
— Picks of the Week
— Featured Team of the Week - Philadelphia Eagles
Arizona Cardinals (3-10):
Very interesting game this week for them since they had to deal with two weather delays but they were still able to outlast the Steelers in a week where neither offense stunned anyone. QB Kyler Murray had a bit of an off game but RB James Conner was able to play really well overall and win a tough fought ground battle in Pittsburgh. The Cardinals have life and it is fun to watch HC Jonathan Gannon on the sidelines interacting with his team. It almost seems like he is potentially going to be able to have the same effect that Demeco Ryans has on the Texans just will have to come in year 2 because of the talent on the roster as constructed and not having his star QB for the first half of the season.
Atlanta Falcons (6-6):
It is such a bummer that the Falcons don’t have a QB. The offense has so many weapons and special pieces but are not able to make plays at the most important position. The defense looked incredible though and really got the team the win in this one. QB Desmond Ridder is very frustrating to watch because he does make some pretty incredible throws but for the most part it feels like he just isn’t ready for the NFL week in and week out when he is asked to take the field. Hopefully QB Desmond Ridder develops and is able to stop holding this team back because they are now atop the division now and have an important game coming up against the Bucs.
Baltimore Ravens (9-3):
Buffalo Bills (6-6):
Carolina Panthers (1-11):
It doesn’t look like things are changing for the Panthers anytime soon. This was a tough fought game but QB Bryce Young still looked far from being worth the #1 overall pick that he was up until this point. Good to see some life from WR Jonathan Mingo who folks were hoping for big things from this year. The focus now for this team though is going to be turned to next year and who will be coaching and what players will be around because there is a lot of work that needs to be done. Some rumors are that Owner David Tepper is going to throw a lot of money at guys like HC Bill Belichick and Jim Harbaugh.
Chicago Bears (4-8):
Cincinnati Bengals (6-6):
What a performance by backup QB Jake Browning. It was his first NFL win since college and man did he play well. Despite playing a good Jaguars defense QB Browning was able to find ways to get the ball to the playmakers. It will be interesting to see how things go for them down the stretch because now all the starting QBs in their division besides Lamar Jackson are hurt. If the Bengals defense can step up like it did towards the end of the game after QB Trevor Lawrence left with injury then this Bengals team still has a good chance to make the playoffs.
Cleveland Browns (7-5):
Tough loss but the QB play actually wasn’t all that bad. QB Joe Flacco actually showed glimpses of Super Bowl Joe from his Ravens days. He definitely is not going to be a long term answer but is probably about as good a stopgap QB as you will find in the NFL at this point in the season. The Browns are going to have to heavily rely on their defense though the rest of the year and this was not their game because QB Matt Stafford picked them apart and played a clean game despite being normally turnover prone. Good news for the Browns though is that WR Elijah Moore stepped up and may be living up to what he was supposed to be when he was drafted by the Jets.
Dallas Cowboys (9-3):
What a game. This was a back and forth scoring affair. The good news is that QB Dak Prescott came out on top with the offense but the bad news is that the defense did not look very good despite supposedly being on of the top ones in the league. The Cowboys have a big game coming up against the Eagles that could have implications for the #1 overall seed in the NFC. The offense is going to have to keep on playing the way they did on Thursday in the postseason if they want to finally get over the hump this year.
Denver Broncos (6-6):
The Broncos are not out but they did get brought back down to Earth this week with their loss against the Texans. The good news is that the Broncos continue to play overall pretty dang good defense especially when having to deal with the offense turning the ball over. The bad news is that QB Russell Wilson still is far from being the old him and struggled in this game quite a bit throwing 3 interceptions. HC Sean Payton is getting about as much as I think anyone can at this point in the season and it still may not be enough to get this team to the playoffs. It will be an interesting final stretch of the season to determine likely how much of a rebuild is needed and at what positions.
Detroit Lions (9-3):
Lions went up big early in this game and looked like they were maybe going to blow the game for a good part of the second half. It was good for them to be able to put this game away and get back on track after a tough loss last week. The Lions now find themselves in the thick of the race for the #1 seed in the NFC now after the Eagles suffered their second loss against the 49ers. The main thing that the Lions need to do now is find ways to close out games and keep their foot on the gas pedal on both offense and defense and not let folks sneak back into games. The main thing I would like to see from the Lions is getting Jahmyr Gibbs more carries because when he is in the game it seems like every time he touches the ball it is electric.
Green Bay Packers (6-6):
What a great win for the Packers and they remain undefeated under HC Matt LaFleur in the month of the December. QB Jordan Love seems to be coming into his own and has been playing really well in recent weeks. Scary for the rest of the league if he is able to continue his upward trend and end up being a franchise QB for Packers who would seem to not be able to miss in that regard. Great game as well by the defense to keep QB Mahomes and co. in check. Also, it was good to see the run game get going in this game as well despite this squad still being without RB Aaron Jones. The Packers may be able to make the playoffs this year and as the youngest team in football set themselves up for a bright future.
Houston Texans (7-5):
The Texans are looking like they are going to the first rookie HC and QB duo to make the playoffs since Chuck Pagano and Andrew Luck did it. QB CJ Stroud is playing incredible this season and setting himself up well for an easy rookie of the year win. Losing WR Tank Dell hurts but there have been plenty of other contributors at WR this season for them so they should be just fine. The defense has been playing super well in recent weeks as well and it is showing that HC Demeco Ryans is putting his stamp on things in Houston in a big way. This team could surprise some folks in the playoffs if they are able to make it and ride some momentum.
Indianapolis Colts (7-5):
What a win by the Colts and with how well they are playing it is clear that HC Shane Steichen is the coach they had been searching for. Despite not having his starting RB Jonathan Taylor and coaching most of the season with QB Gardner Minshew starting they are 7-5 at this point in the season and got a good win against an always tough Titans team due in large part to their head coach. Great thing here too was that the defense stepped up when it needed to but definitely could have been a more complete defensive performance by the Colts. If they can keep the momentum going and get a few more losses from the Jaguars they might have a chance to take the division.
Jacksonville Jaguars (8-4):
This was a tough loss to the Bengals because the defense did not play well but had QB Trevor Lawrence not gone out they may have still been able to pull out a win. The offense looked good for the Jags throughout this game and they were really clicking til QB Trevor Lawrence went out with what appears to be an ankle sprain that they will evaluate with an MRI. With that said the Bengals with backup QB Jake Browning had not business putting up over 30 points against the Jags defense. They struggled to contain and stop QB Browning. Going forward the defense is the most important thing for the Jaguars in order to make a deep playoff run and then the health of QB Trevor Lawrence in the long term.
Kansas City Chiefs (8-4):
Tough game for the Chiefs even with Taylor Swift in attendance. I know that there will be complaints about the calls towards the end of this game but to improve and continue to move forward it is key to look at the rest of this game. What went well was that RB Isiah Pacheco average 6 yards per carry and had over 100 yards rushing. What did not look good was the overall defensive effort and the passing offense as a whole. TE Travis Kelce looked tired and a bit slow, Mahomes is missing throws that he never would have missed in years past and his receivers are not helping him out any either. The Chiefs are always going to have a chance though as long as HC Andy Reid and QB Patrick Mahomes are there.
Las Vegas Raiders (5-7):
Los Angeles Chargers (5-7):
What an interesting game. Neither team on offense looked good at all and I think despite the Chargers coming out of this one with a win, they will not have HC Brandon Staley leading them next year. It is amazing how a roster that is so talented can be so bad. I know some of the offensive performance from Sunday falls on the players and OC Kellen Moore but the Chargers are known for consistently under performing. Now I know they won and am thrilled about that because I like QB Justin Herbert quite a bit but it is still clear to me that they are not going very far this season. The defense played well but it was also against the Patriots who have found ways to look even worse on offense than we thought was possible this year.
Los Angeles Rams (6-6):
Great win for the Rams who are charging back into the thick of things with their recent performances. It was good to see WR Puka Nacua have a bounceback game and also to see QB Matthew Stafford play like his vintage self. I imagine they are going to give the Seahawks a run for their money down this final stretch and may end up surprising some people if they are able to sneak into the playoffs.
Miami Dolphins (9-3):
The Dolphins had a great weekend! Not only did they beat the Commanders easily but they also got to see the Chiefs and Jaguars lose leaving them atop the AFC and only tied record-wise with the Baltimore Ravens. The offense was just clicking on all cylinders and somehow WR Tyreek Hill was getting wide open behind the defense as if the Commanders didn’t know he was this really fast guy who likes to take the top off defenses. Miami keeps on rolling and the defense in improving which could make them a very scary playoff team.
Minnesota Vikings (6-6):
New England Patriots (2-10):
A couple things about the Patriots here. #1 the team or at least the defense clearly has not given up and are giving HC Bill Belichick everything still even when all hope is lost this late in the season basically. #2 the offense is really that bad and it is not all the coach’s fault or even the QB’s. A lot of it has to do with the players where it appears that they do not have a single receiver who can create separation offense or that would even be a second option on any other team besides maybe the Chiefs. It is going to be an interesting offseason because it seems that Bill Belichick the GM has not made the best moves to set this team up for success like they have in the past.
New Orleans Saints (5-7):
Tough loss and even worse news that the Falcons won and QB Derek Carr may be sidelined. I know a lot of folks in New Orleans were booing Carr but there is no doubt in my mind that he is better than everything else they have. I have a feeling a lot of this has to do with him learning a new offense, playing injured this year, and them not being on the same page as an offense. I think year 2 of QB Derek Carr will be much better and that is not to say that this season is entirely over but I feel like this season there was very much a learning curve for everyone and health issues.
New York Giants (4-8):
New York Jets (4-8):
Everyone seemed to think the problem was QB Zach Wilson but I would argue that he is still their best option on the roster that is healthy and available at the moment. It might be the unpopular but there was nothing I saw out of Tim Boyle and Trevor Siemian that made me think they were any better than Zach. Clearly once QB Aaron Rodgers is fully healthy he would be the best option but if they are out of playoff contention it would be smart to let him rest and avoid him potentially getting injured again behind what has been a bad offensive line all year long.
Philadelphia Eagles (10-2):
Hopefully this game serves as a wakeup call for the Eagles. They had been getting by in a lot of close games and playing down to opponents it had felt like at times. The encouraging thing for Eagles fans is that they did really well in the first quarter and had a recipe for being able to stop the 49ers. If they are able to get in the endzone on their first two drives rather than kick field goals from the red zone this would have been a totally different game. Big problems for them though are their linebacking core and secondary. Good move to get LB Shaq Leonard who could provide some help there depending on how he is feeling in terms of wanting to play. The other concern I saw for the Eagles was that Hurts had a lot of time on most of his dropbacks and still struggled to find guys open at times. I think the Eagles have a great receiving core with Smith and Brown but it appeared that it would take them a while to get open. I don’t know if it is more of a play calling thing or a complement to the Niners secondary but should be something we pay attention to over the last weeks of the season.
Pittsburgh Steelers (7-5):
Rough week for the Steelers who had to deal with 2 weather delays and losing their starting QB. I don’t feel like this week was the norm for the Steelers and that they will bounce back even with QB Mitch Trubisky likely in for a week or two. I expect them to take advantage of the injuries in their division at QB and for their defense to step up and make things hard on their rivals and other teams in the league going down the stretch. This loss too wasn’t as bad as many people will think because the Cardinals are a much better team now than their record shows.
San Francisco 49ers (9-3):
Great statement win and one they needed to get after some of the trash talk that came from WR Deebo Samuel and others. Speaking of him he had a great game and it is clear when everyone is healthy on this 49ers offense they are going to be tough to beat and will just wear teams down. QB Brock Purdy is sensational and seems to find ways to make throw after throw. The biggest difference in this offense is because he is able to consistently make throws and plays outside the numbers whereas previously with Jimmy it always down the middle of the field and never to the outside. Looking forward to see how the Niners close out the season and if they are able to get that #1 seed but going to likely need a bit of help from another rival of theirs in the Dallas Cowboys.
Seattle Seahawks (6-6):
Tough one for the Seahawks who played well on offense and got themselves in a shootout that they just could not outlast and be the last one standing. The Seahawks now find themselves in a tough spot with the Rams playing well and holding the tiebreaker because of the head to head matchup. The defense needs to shore things up and the offense needs to play like they did against the Cowboys in order to give this team in a chance going down the stretch.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers (5-7):
Good way to gut out a must win to keep themselves close to the Falcons who are leading the division. Big milestone here too with Mike Evans getting to 1000 yards once again this season keeping WR Jerry Rice’s record within reach. It sometimes feels like WR Mike Evans is one of the most disrespected WRs in football because year in and year out he makes plays and gets the job done no matter who is playing QB.
Tennessee Titans (4-8):
Tough loss for the Titans. QB Will Levis is showing his youth and completed less than 50 percetnt of his passes. Something else interesting to note was that QB Will Levis and WR Deandre Hopkins were arguing on the sidelines. While everything got sorted out it appears this will be something to watch for in the coming weeks as well. Also, an area of concern will be watching the health of RB Derrick Henry and how things go with his healthy over the coming weeks. At this point though the Titans are likely to be on the outside looking in at the end of the season when the playoffs come around. The good news is that the coaching staff and ownership will likely have seen enough of QB Will Levis to be able to make a decision about the future at the position.
Washington Commanders (4-9):
This team has not looked the same since trading away their key players at the deadline on defense. I see HC Ron Rivera being on the way out and potentially other big change coming to this organization since it recently changed ownership. I imagine QB Sam Howell will remain as he has overall played well this year despite all the turmoil and change. This also is not as bad a loss as some may feel since the Dolphins are a really good team who have improved significantly on defense throughout the season it appears.
Picks of the Week:
Went 8-5 last week on the picks and hopefully can have another similar week this week.
Featured Team of the Week: (Philadelphia Eagles)

Restaurant of the Week (Angelo's Pizzeria):
This is my personal favorite pizza spot. It is hard to get in and get a pizza sometimes but the key is to just keep calling them. They only do carryout orders so you can grab one and then head to the game in an uber or your car while enjoy the pizza. I recommend just getting their Margherita pizza and if splitting it with someone. This pizza is too good to share with more than 2 other people in my opinion and really is perfect for couples. That is, if you are pizza lovers and can eat a lot of food which I know I definitely can. This place has been through a lot in the past few years with kitchen fires and all but always seems to re open and have a never ending amount of people who want their pizza.

ptdotme's NFL Elo Power Rankings After Week 13

(By popular demand, see the rankings without the influence of last year's season-ending ratings in my comment below, or here.)
This is OC. I’ve written code to calculate NFL team Elo ratings1 on a week to week basis. The goal is to use simple Elo ratings to create power rankings without the influence of human bias and emotion. The ratings are based on each team's rating from the previous week, with a "parity reset" applied every offseason. The model has been tested for accuracy against game outcomes since week 1 of the 20122 season. The ratings are derived only from each game's score, venue, and date. There are a number of variables/weights in my secret sauce but otherwise they're fairly conservative, basic, Elo ratings.
This is all a work in progress and feedback is appreciated! See more stats and info on my 2023 NFL Elo Power Rankings page.
Note: You may feel teams are ranked too high or low based on recent games, and you may be right. However, the model has been tested and is more accurate when it doesn't overreact to individual games. The goal is model accuracy, not rankings that "look right." 2

1See Wikipedia. Elo ratings are numeric and assigned to each contestant. The ratings are used to estimate performance. After each game, the difference between a contestant's estimated and actual performance is used to update their rating. For the NFL, this can all be summarized as "Who did you beat/lose to and by how much? And who have they beaten/lost to and by how much? And who have they beaten/lost to ...
2Moving backward through the years, each preceding season has a much smaller impact on the current ratings. Team ratings from 2010 have zero impact on today's ratings. Ratings from only a couple years ago, say 2021, have almost no effect on today's ratings. Seasons going back to 2010 are only used by the model to ensure its accuracy over thousands of NFL games.

2023.12.05 05:37 indiandumbledore Mock Draft 2.0: 2 Round Mock with Trades

DRAFT ORDER AS OF 12/04/23 (PRE MONDAY NIGHT FOOTBALL)

ROUND 1

Chicago Bears (1.1) - Caleb Williams, QB, USC - Don't overthink it. You get a rookie QB on a rookie-scale deal and get to build the team around him. Fields will definitely have suitors, and you can recoup some value in the form of picks. Caleb is my QB1, and he's going to have a great WR to throw to in DJ Moore that should help ease some of the rookie pains.
New England Patriots (1.2) - Drake Maye, QB, UNC - The league messed up. Giving Emperor Palpatine a stud franchise QB is a scary thought, and that's exactly what the Patriots get in Drake Maye. Move on from the Mac Jones disaster, and start fresh with a QB with a monster arm and great accuracy and touch.
Arizona Cardinals (1.3) - Marvin Harrison Jr., WR, Ohio St. - The best prospect in the class for me, the clear and obvious pick for the Cardinals. I don't even need to explain this pick but he's a generational talent at the receiver position and should immediately transform the offense for Kyler.
TRADE UP: New York Jets (1.4) - Olu Fashanu, OT, Penn St. - The Jets know that both the Commanders and Bears are in play for a tackle and they also know they desperately need some stud talent at tackle (and not just a stopgap) for next season with Aaron Rodgers. It'll cost a future 2nd round pick and some change to move up, but well worth it in my opinion to only get someone to protect Rodgers but also be a franchise left tackle for years to come.
Chicago Bears (1.5) - Joe Alt, OT, Notre Dame - Don't mess this up again. Protect your new franchise QB and let him develop behind a proper offensive line with actual weapons. Getting a young, stud tackle should help and if you think Braxton Jones can't play guard over Nate Davis or swing tackle, then trade him because his value only went up this past season.
TRADE DOWN: Washington Commanders (1.6) - Brock Bowers, TE, Georgia - Moving back only to take the guy they would've taken anyway at 4, the Commanders give their OC his new Travis Kelce. An incredible receiver and amazing blocker, Bowers is just an offensive weapon.
New York Giants (1.7) - Malik Nabers, WR, LSU - I hate Daniel Jones as much as the next person, but eating his contract right now would be disastrous, so if you're going to have another year of him as the starting QB you might as well give him an elite WR to work with. Nabers is so unbelievably good and would be a clear cut WR1 to me in most other classes, but he just happens to be in a class with Marvin Harrison Jr.
TRADE UP: Las Vegas Raiders (1.8) - Jayden Daniels, QB, LSU - Moving ahead of two potential quarterbacks spots in Tampa and New Orleans, the Raiders get their new franchise QB. The probable Heisman winner, Daniels had a monster season and can be an immediate upgrade over every single QB on roster.
New Orleans Saints (1.9) - Rome Odunze, WR, Washington - The offense desperately needs some juice, and since Carr can't really be moved on from yet, you can address the receiving group. Olave is obviously great, but Rome Odunze is a Michael Thomas replacement (and upgrade).
Tampa Bay Buccaneers (1.10) - Dallas Turner, EDGE, Alabama - Mike Evans should be a first ballot Hall of Famer and it would be a disgrace if he wasn't a Buc for life. I'm going to assume they bring him back, maybe on a short term deal, and address their other huge need: pass rush. You have the choice of the top edge rusher, and Turner has some nasty motor and great speed to power conversion.
TRADE DOWN: Tennessee Titans (1.11) - JC Latham, OT, Alabama - Probably who they would've taken at 8 anyway, the Titans desperately need offensive line help and Latham helps in a major way.
Los Angeles Chargers (1.12) - Kool-Aid McKinstry, CB, Alabama - FIRE BRANDON STALEY. Now, the entire secondary needs an overhaul (so does most of the defense to be fair), and I'm starting with getting a true CB1 for the future.
Cincinnati Bengals (1.13) - Keon Coleman, WR, FSU - Assuming you can't bring back Tee Higgins, Keon Coleman is a monster replacement for Joe Burrow. He's big, strong, and is amazing at contested catches downfield.
Buffalo Bills (1.14) - Nate Wiggins, CB, Clemson - Another team who's entire defensive secondary needs an overhaul, and the Bills for once pick high enough in the draft to get a star boundary corner for the future.
TRADE UP: Arizona Cardinals (1.15) - Laiatu Latu, OLB/EDGE, UCLA - The Cardinals have a plethora of picks and the Broncos are sorely lacking picks. In a class with some great defensive line talent, the Cardinals move up to take their top edge on the board (and my top edge). Latu only falls this far because of the health concerns, but he's way too good of a player to fall much further.
Seattle Seahawks (1.16) - Jared Verse, EDGE, FSU - Though their divisional rivals jumped them to take another player at the same position, the Seahawks have to be extremely happy to pair up Mafe with Jared Verse, a great all around true edge who is both a good run defender and a great pass rusher.
Los Angeles Rams (1.17) - Taliese Fuaga, OT, Oregon St. - As tempting as Chop Robinson is, the Rams desperately need to revamp their offensive line and that starts with a mauler in Fuaga.
TRADE DOWN: Denver Broncos (1.18) - Johnny Newton, IDL, Illinois - Trading down and picking up some extra picks, the Broncos take who they might have taken at 15 in Johnny Newton. He's an absolute disruptor on the interior and is a staple for the future for a defensive line that has a hodge-podge of contributors.
Atlanta Falcons (1.19) - Bo Nix, QB, Oregon - FIRE ARTHUR SMITH. Now, with that out of the way, I know people still have PTSD from when he was at Auburn, but Bo Nix had a special season and has been great while at Oregon. He's going to complement Bijan incredibly well in the option game, and has the arm and touch to hit Jonnu Smith and the fullbacks on roster.
Green Bay Packers (1.20) - Cooper DeJean, DB/CB/S, Iowa - A secondary that needs a complete overhaul outside of Jaire, the Packers go with the best defensive prospect on the board and a guy who can be an outside corner, slot corner or safety.
Minnesota Vikings (1.21) - Chop Robinson, EDGE, Penn St. - I wanted a trade up honestly, but I just couldn't quite find a way to get the Vikings a QB but I honestly don't think they need to force it. Spend a year building the team back up with a stopgap at QB and get your franchise guy next year. In the meanwhile, take the best defensive player on the board because the whole defense needs to be replaced.
Indianapolis Colts (1.22) - Emeka Egbuka, WR, Ohio St. - A two-fold pick: if Pittman isn't back, Ebguka becomes your immediate WR1/2 with Downs. If Pittman is back, then he's your starting slot. And you get the added benefit of depriving a division rival of pairing up their star QB with his college WR.
Pittsburgh Steelers (1.23) - Amarius Mims, OT, Georgia - Everyone keeps going with the storyline of reuniting Joey Porter Jr. with his Penn St buddy, but I decided to reunite Broderick Jones with his Georgia tackle buddy and complete the bookends of the offensive line for years to come.
Houston Texans (1.24) - JT Tuimoloau, EDGE, Ohio St. - Having a stud rookie QB sure does change everything. With Tank and Nico looking like legitimate receivers, Demeco Ryans can go all in on fixing his side of the ball: the defense. They got Will Anderson last year and he looks great so far, so why not pair him up with another stud on the other side in JT. CJ Stroud might have missed out on Egbuka, but he gets another Ohio St. teammate instead.
Kansas City Chiefs (1.25) - Adonai Mitchell, WR, Texas - This ABSOLUTELY has to be WR. If I have to watch another snap of Skyy Moore, I'm gonna lose it.
Jacksonville Jaguars (1.26) - Bralen Trice, DE, Washington - Travon Walker is still developing, but the Jaguars could use some true defensive ends in their 3-4 as well. Adam Gotsis is not exactly a revelation at 3-4 DE, so the Jags get a pass rushing monster who has the size to play the position or be an outside pass rusher.
Dallas Cowboys (1.27) - Troy Fautanu, OT/OG, Washington - Tyler Smith was incredible at tackle last year and can absolutely play the position but since Cowboys fans hate the idea of moving him, Fautanu is a great pick because he can be a great guard or tackle. Regardless of who plays what position, this should help replace Tyron Smith.
Detroit Lions (1.28) - Terrion Arnold, CB, Alabama - This has to be defense, and the best player on the board just happens to be corner, which is a position of need anyway.
San Francisco 49ers (1.29) - Kalen King, CB, Penn St. - The 49ers need someone opposite Ward, and King is the guy. Lenoir has looked promising at times, but he's not stopping me from getting an obvious upgrade in King.
Baltimore Ravens (1.30) - Kamari Lassiter, CB, Georgia - The secondary could definitely use both an injection of youth and an upgrade, and Lassiter serves as both.
Miami Dolphins (1.31) - Graham Barton, OL, Duke - The Dolphins OL is quite injury prone and needs help just about everywhere because of that. Barton can honestly play basically every position - he can be a tackle or injury replacement for now, but should be a great guard/center for the future.
TRADE UP: New England Patriots (1.32) - Brian Thomas Jr., LSU - I know they never do this but hopefully being this historically bad is enough of a shock to make them try new things. The Pats jump the WR needy Panthers to make sure they get their guy in Thomas Jr. Nabers overshadows him at LSU, but Brian Thomas Jr. is a stud and should be a great weapon for Drake Maye to grow with.

ROUND 2

Carolina Panthers (2.1) - Xavier Legette, WR, South Carolina - Despite the Pats jumping them, the Panthers desperately need receiving help for Bryce Young and the take a local kid to help boost another horrendous offense. Legette is great after the catch as well, making him a great weapon for a young QB.
TRADE DOWN: Philadelphia Eagles (2.2) - Jordan Morgan, OT, Arizona - A stout and dependable tackle that will be an understudy for Lane Johnson, who despite his old age, has been phenomenal and is a first ballot Hall of Famer.
Arizona Cardinals (2.3) - Quinyon Mitchell, CB, Toledo - A team that just desperately needs to be upgrade their defense as much as possible. They got a stud pass rusher, and now they get a potential stud CB1 for the future.
Washington Commanders (2.4) - Kingsley Suamataia, OT, BYU - Not taking a tackle here might be criminal. Sam Howell has gotten murdered this year (partly his fault, but also partly not) and the OL needs help badly.
TRADE UP: Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2.5) - Michael Penix Jr., QB, Washington - The Bucs jump a potential QB spot in the Giants to take their guy for the future. Baker is probably not the long term answer and this is a low risk move to take a guy who had a phenomenal year and has the arm talent to hit those hole shots to Mike Evans/Godwin/Odunze.
New York Giants (2.6) - TJ Tampa, CB, Iowa St. - With Penix gone, I would address the next biggest need for the Giants and that's having an actual boundary corner with size and speed opposite Banks. QB is still in play, but can't pass up a great corner prospect at this spot.
Tennessee Titans (2.7) - Xavier Worthy, WR, Texas - The offense got a true tackle in the first round and now they get some actual juice and speed in the second round with X. The receiving group is horrible outside of DHop, and Hopkins is obviously not a long term option.
Washington Commander (2.8) - Denzel Burke, DB, Ohio St. - The defense just needs so much help and at this spot, the best value pick is Burke.
TRADE DOWN: Green Bay Packers (2.9) - Troy Franklin, WR, Oregon - Another speedster added for Jordan Love, although Franklin has developed into also being a great route runner.
Las Vegas Raiders (2.10) - Josh Newton, CB, TCU - Defense, defense, defense for the Raiders. Defensive players not named Maxx Crosby are definitely replaceable and the best value here is corner.
Los Angeles Chargers (2.11) - Leonard Taylor, DL, Miami - Defensive overhaul continues for the Chargers with some defensive line help.
Philadelphia Eagles (2.12) - Tyler Nubin, S, Minnesota - The entire secondary needs help, and the best fit here is a rangy safety with actual cover skills (yes, that is a shot at both Byard and Blankenship).
Cincinnati Bengals (2.13) - Patrick Paul, OT, Houston - A first round caliber falling to them in the 2nd should be a blessing, and the Bengals run this pick in to help bolster the offensive line around Burrow.
New Orleans Saints (2.14) - Caelon Carson, CB, Wake Forest - The Saints just need to blow it up, and getting a future CB1 and current CB2 to pair with Lattimore is one way to make sure the defense stays good through the rebuild.
New York Giants (2.15) - JJ McCarthy, QB, Michigan - Yea I just had to do it. Jones is so bad, and it can't hurt to develop a guy who has a great arm and great touch to take over when you can get off the contract.
TRADE UP: Minnesota Vikings (2.16) - Kamren Kinchens, S, Miami - Harrison Smith has to hang it up at this point, and Bynum isn't exactly much better so the Vikings address a major need at safety with a supremely talented player with a knack for making big plays and jump another safety-needy team in the Bills.
Buffalo Bills (2.17) - Calen Bullock, S, USC - The secondary is injury prone, and is definitely aging so the Bills go all in by doubling down and taking a future Poyer replacement.
Houston Texans (2.18) - T'Vondre Sweat, DT/DL, Texas - Demeco gets to double down on fixing his defense the 49ers way: by investing in the defensive line. Sweat is a great player who can play inside or 3-tech and can push the pocket back with ease given his size and low pad level.
Green Bay Packers (2.19) - Tyler Guyton, OT, Oklahoma - A Bakhtiari replacement, Guyton has the tools to be a first round guy but needs to be a little bit more consistent.
TRADE DOWN: Los Angeles Rams (2.20) - Brandon Dorlus, DL, Oregon - The Rams invest in the trenches as they look to retool their team for the future but remain competitive with Stafford and Kupp. Dorlus is big/strong enough to play inside or outside but will primarily be an interior player.
Atlanta Falcons (2.21) - Chris Braswell, EDGE, Alabama - The opposite pass rusher to Dallas Turner, Braswell has looked great and has the explosion and freak athleticism to be an outside rush linebacker.
Pittsburgh Steelers (2.22) - Jeremiah Trotter Jr., LB, Clemson - I really wanted corner but I just don't love the value here given the freak athletes available at linebacker to replace WalkeElandon Roberts.
Cleveland Browns (2.23) - Kris Jenkins, DL/DT - Michigan - The Browns need to make sure the defense remains a strength and they could be losing a lot of meat on the interior of the line this offseason. This is a way to replenish some of that.
Indianapolis Colts (2.24) - Ja'Tavion Sanders, TE, Texas - Add even more explosion and size to the offense with Sanders. The Colts would have a completely retooled offense ready to go for AR15 next year.
Kansas City Chiefs (2.25) - Javon Foster, OT, Notre Dame - The second most disappointing aspect of this team has definitely been the tackle play and the Chiefs invest to get younger and significantly better with Foster.
Jacksonville Jaguars (2.26) - Malachi Corley, WR, WKU - Depending on how you view a soon to be 29 year old Ridley, the Jags could look to add some youth to the receiving room to prepare for the future and maybe replace Zay Jones.
Detroit Lions (2.27) - Princely Umanmielen, DL, Florida - The Lions keep improving their defensive with a versatile defensive lineman. He can rush from the edge on some packages and from the interior on others. Either way, the Lions need pass rush help outside of Hutch and this should help.
Dallas Cowboys (2.28) - Trey Benson, RB, Florida St. - Pollard is on a 1 year deal and Rico Dowdle isn't a true bellcow back. You get RB1 in the class and a future bellcow for the offense.
Baltimore Ravens (2.29) - Johnny Wilson, WR, Florida St. - I mean talk about size at the receiver position. At 6'7", 237 lbs, this is a very different type of receiver to anyone on the team and should help boost the passing game post Odell.
San Francisco 49ers (2.30) - Cooper Beebe, OT/OG, Kansas St. - Guard tackle flexibility for a team that needs to shore up the OL to make sure they can be as dominant as they usually are with the running game.
Miami Dolphins (2.31) - Maason Smith, DL, LSU - A true nose tackle/defensive tackle, the Dolphins get some depth and youth to the interior of their 3-4 D Line. Maason is a great run defender and has enough burst to be an occasional disruptor in the pass game.
Philadelphia Eagles (2.32) - Ladd McConkey, WR, Georgia - The Eagles do need a reliable slot and though he's not the speedster that Quez Watkins is, he's a true slot with a great hands and excellent between the numbers. He reminds me a lot of ARSB, and the Eagles should be happy to pair their outside monsters with the perfect slot receiver.

2023.12.04 21:45 FlatSwing9745 Haters Guide to the 2023 Bowl Season (and CFP Playoffs)

So. We made it. Bowl season is upon us, coinciding with the most wonderful time of the year. Time to go over these tantalizing matchups that otherwise would not happen on a yearly basis.
*disclaimer, I’m only doing bowls that feature Power 5 teams. Sorry, Miami (OH)*
LA Bowl (Boise State vs UCLA)
Welp. Any good faith that this program has is dead. Dante Moore is transferring. Somehow UCLA is keeping Chip Kelly for 2024. Boise State is gonna show how it was a terrible move.
Independence Bowl (Texas Tech vs Cal)
Here I am wondering how the fuck Cal snuck into bowl season. Cal should take advantage of QB-less Texas Tech. This should be momentum for when they join the ACC next year.
Boca Raton Bowl (USF vs Syracuse)
Surprising fact. USF owns this series. This used to be a Big East Rivalry back in the 2000s. I think it’s a close game but I take Syracuse pulling away late.
Gasparilla Bowl (UCF vs Georgia Tech)
The ACC swapped G Tech and Duke the last minute to avoid a repeat of Duke vs UCF. Should we tell them that Georgia Tech also played UCF last year? In fact, this is becoming a rivalry of its own. They played in 2020 as G-Tech’s only non-conference game. One team or the other could break out, but I’m taking the more experienced Haynes King and the Jackets.
Birmingham Bowl (Duke vs Troy)
This matchup is simple. Duke is a sitting duck with Riley Leonard likely going to Notre Dame in the transfer portal. Troy has a big task in representing the best of the Sun Belt.
Las Vegas Bowl (Northwestern vs Utah)
I actually could not believe it. Northwestern in a bowl game AND guaranteed a winning season. Truth is stranger than fiction. This game should be a battle for coaching supremacy. Kyle Whittingham, even though it was a down year for Utah due to a crowded Pac-12, still has that magic in him. I think it’s gonna be close, but I’ll choose the Utes.
Quick Lane Bowl (Bowling Green vs Minnesota)
I somehow have an obligation to review this game. This is undeniably the worst out of the bunch. One that features a MAC team and one that is only here due to APR. Could be entertaining. After all, Bowling Green won the last time these two faced off.
Guaranteed Rate Bowl (Kansas vs UNLV)
Two teams that seemed unlikely that they would ever go to a bowl game for the rest of their days 10 years ago squaring off against each other. I think Kansas has the edge due to the experience of Bean and Neal under center. But let UNLV have this one. They earned it.
Military Bowl (V-Tech vs Tulane)
The thing about this matchup was that back when both teams were independent, this used to be a rivalry. They haven’t played each other since 1989, before Frank Beamer. Tulane took down USC last year, could they do it again?
Duke’s Mayo Bowl (UNC vs West Virginia)
“You could not live with your own failure. Where did that bring you? Back to the Mayo Bowl.” Mack Brown and UNC has to suffer humiliation again. Drake Maye should play this game for the memes, but we all know he’s gonna opt out because of the draft. If so, West Virginia has a major chance.
Holiday Bowl (Louisville vs USC)
Congrats Lincoln Riley, you officially wasted the college career of Caleb Williams. He’s opting out this game. But knowing that Louisville has been struggling with flushing their constipated turds down the drain, the Plummer will have a hard time matching up to the Trojans.
Texas Bowl (Texas A&M vs Oklahoma State)
A former Big 12 rivalry renewed for a second time. The Aggies and Pokes had played each other every year that both teams were in that conference. Aggies are reeling from another embarrassing season and a head coach firing. Oklahoma State had to worry about their own embarrassment. It’s a close one for me.
Fenway Bowl (Boston College vs SMU)
Interesting. SMU playing a future rivalry game in Boston College at Fenway. If SMU was in the ACC this year, they would be contenders but not championship-worthy. SMU needs to prove to themselves, but especially the Bay schools, that SMU is the new blood that the ACC needs to compete with the rest.
Pinstripe Bowl (Rutgers vs Miami)
This rivalry is more than just Big East. Although Miami won every game against Rutgers while in that conference, Schiano was mentoring Cristobal in his early years with Rutgers. This will be teacher vs student. With Whiskey Dick transferring and their backup getting killed, Miami will have to rely on their 3rd string. And they have to play in the brutal cold. For Rutgers to win, they must run the ball, a tried and true formula in modern-day Rutgers. Kyle Monangai will have to go up against a good defense, but so will the Canes. Miami was Ohio State before Rutgers played Ohio State. Out of all their previous matchups, this will be Rutgers’ best chance of getting a win over them. Like V-Tech earlier this year, I hope they do.
Pop Tarts Bowl (Kansas State vs NC State)
Well this is new. We had the Cheeze-It Bowl beforehand. We have the Mayo Bowl. We now have a new gimmick: the winner eating a live mascot. Does this count as murder in the first degree? I think Kansas State gets the nod for me.
Alamo Bowl (Oklahoma vs Arizona)
The Dillion Gabriel era has ended for Oklahoma. He lasted two years under Venrables’ Sooners. OU might go to the SEC, but Arizona is no walk in the park. They have been a surprise team in the PAC-12. In fact, the team I least expected to make a meaningful run. With their QB out, Oklahoma will have a hard time matching Noah Fifita.
Gator Bowl (Clemson vs Kentucky)
Another down season for Dabo Swinney. Not to mention, Dabo is going to bulk up its coaching staff for next year. Good hires in Matt Luke and Chris Rumpth. Whether or not it will bring in transfers for NIL purposes will still be determined. This matchup is a full-circle moment for Clemson. Dabo’s first bowl win was Kentucky, the last matchup of these two programs before this one. Kentucky’s hope is for Sweet Baby Ray Davis to penetrate that Clemson defense. Dabo needs this tune-up in preparation for Georgia next year.
Sun Bowl (Notre Dame vs Oregon State)
Nothing else was open for Notre Dame due to bullshit with the ACC, so this is the best matchup they’ll get: a soon independent Oregon State team. What’s crazy is that the Irish never beaten Oregon State. The Beavs won twice in the 2000s. That is not to say that they’re gonna crater in this game. Uiagaleilei and your head coach are gone. And so is your chances in winning this game.
Liberty Bowl (Memphis vs Iowa State)
Nice rebound from Iowa State from a visceral last year. Their reward is a rematch of the 2017 edition of the Liberty Bowl. None might remember that the Cyclones won by one point that game. I think Iowa State is better off this time because of that defense, but who knows?
Music City Bowl (Auburn vs Maryland)
Fuck you Auburn. Seriously. Fuck you. You robbed us of a playoff without an SEC team. If it wasn’t for that goddamn Hail Mary, Bama would not be in the playoffs. The same goes to your performance against Georgia. I don’t understand how one team could look flawless against Arkansas one week to lose to fucking New Mexico State in another! Hope you’re still not spooked by the last name Taigovaloa, Auburn, because Maryland will put your season to the grave. At least you could say that, unlike previous meetings, this one will not be for national championship implications.
Reliaquest Bowl (LSU vs Wisconsin)
So nothing has changed in Wisconsin. Luke Fickell sputtered in his first year, the same way that last year went. The grand prize for the Badgers this year is getting maimed by an LSU team that wants revenge from 2016. Remember this hit? Yeah, they’re out for blood. Try all you want, but that offense will cut cheese like it is a chef at Arirang.
Citrus Bowl (Iowa vs Tennessee)
This is probably the most predictable mismatch out of all the bowls. Iowa has no offense but has one of the best defenses. Tennessee is just an average SEC team. That checks out. Thank god for Iowa that Brian Ferentz will be gone after this.
So now we arrive at the New Year’s Six. Time to look over the ones that will not be hosting the Semifinals
Cotton Bowl (Mizzou vs THE Ohio State)
The Buckeye faithful get their wish. Kyle McCord is transferring. So is Julian Fleming. It’s Air Noland season. This, to an extent, gives Mizzou a better chance to win this game. The magical season for Mizzou will conclude with their first major Bowl game since 2013 (also the Cotton Bowl). Brady Cook, Cody Schrader, and Luther Bolden should do their part, but they’re gonna have to take on an elite Buckeye defense, either way.
Fiesta Bowl (Oregon vs Liberty)
I’m so proud of Liberty getting so far into this season. Still undefeated, albeit with the softest schedule out of anyone. This is, sadly, where the ride ends. Bo Nix will be back for one last ride before he goes to the NFL. You know damn well that offense is gonna be intact, too.
Peach Bowl (Ole Miss vs Penn State)
First ever meeting of two alike teams: both who lost twice to their respective conference overlords. It also is a battle of two high-powered offenses. That Penn State defense and Drew Allar must step up to win this matchup.
Orange Bowl (Florida State vs Georgia)
OK, this is an unfair fate to Florida State. They have done everything imaginable. Beating LSU, Clemson, Miami, Florida, and limping across the finish line when they beat Louisville, and they didn’t make it. They were undefeated. The committee thinks what is best for the playoffs is taking the Noles out like a horse with a broken leg. And I mean it in the most literal manner. Jordan Travis’ injury killed the season. And worse, they’re gonna be fed to the Dawgs. Wouldn’t be mad if Florida State decides to stick it to the CFP and forfeit the game. As for Georgia, terrible fate for them as well not getting the three-peat, but it was understandable considering that Bama won. This will be how Georgia will bid farewell to Brock Bowers, Ladd McConkey, and the final pieces of that generational dynasty. Shame.
So we now have our four teams. Let’s see how they stack up against each other. Playing in the Rose Bowl this year is…
Rose Bowl (Michigan vs Alabama)
*buzzer* [You're fucked!]
Oh great. Alabama is back in the playoffs. Again. I honestly don’t know how they do it. How are they this consistent on a high level? Bama has won three championships out of nine held in the CFP era, but had been in the national championship game SIX times out of nine. That’s why they call it the Alabama Invitational. Not to mention they won three championships in the BCS era. Saban is a generational coach that comes across every 20 years. You know, ones like Bear Bryant, Bobby Bowden, and Tom Osborne. Not to mention that the reason the SEC has been the Conference of Champions for this entire millennium was because of him, and the best coaches and the best players gravitate towards him. And they also go to fellow SEC schools just so they could beat them. This was exactly why LSU and Georgia won those championships: its because when you beat Alabama, you are favorites to win the National Championships. I may be ranting, but this talk about realignment and money is because Nick Saban is the catalyst for everything.
As for Michigan, they have been through trial by fire. They have suffered half the season without their coach, Jim Harbaugh. To be honest, they’ll be fine, even if Jim goes to the Bears or any other team in the NFL. After all, their biggest games, Penn State and Ohio State, were won without him and without the looming threat of cheating. And if they defeat Alabama in the “Grand Daddy of them all”, they would make a huge statement.
This game is gonna come down to Michigan’s offense. They have not been generating that much points in their final stretch, which included their biggest games. Even then, their defense would hold it down. Alabama’s offense had been off the pedal for some of the season, too. But Jalen Milroe’s progression as QB will be instrumental to Bama’s success in this game. I think it will come down to the running game. Roydell Williams and Jase McClellan had been good options but they have to match up with the best RB duo in the nation, Corum and Edwards. I also want to see this safety battle between Caleb Downs and Mikey Sainristil; those two have balled out this season.
Last time Bama had faced Michigan, they won in the 2019 Citrus Bowl. The only other time these two met in the Saban era, Bama had a much more impressive game in 2012.
The winner of the Rose Bowl will face one of two teams playing in this year’s Sugar Bowl, which are…
Sugar Bowl (Washington vs Texas)
*ding*
Interesting. I expected Texas to be in the playoffs, but I didn’t expect a rematch from last year’s Alamo Bowl. This makes this matchup much more comparable. Both QB’s will be facing off against each other, maturing their craft as the season went on. Texas will be without Jonathan Brooks, a crushing blow, but they have players that could share the load. For Washington, they need to get back to early season form. They played down to competition, albeit in a tough Pac-12. But they do what is necessary to win. When in doubt, dimes to Rome Odunze. Washington also has the edge on defense, which needs to step up. Let’s hope the Huskies’ offense could get back to the record-shattering form that they had in September, or else they would fight a losing battle. If I were the Huskies, use the advantageous running game (Dillion Johnson) while Texas doesn’t have a suitable RB for the game. In last year’s matchup, Ewers was the better QB but Texas failed to score the big points. Will that change?
Predictions
This is probably the most unpredictable CFP that I’ve seen in a while. Bama has been great, but when compared to Georgia, they are a close second in terms of talent. Michigan has the experience, but they haven’t had the necessary Strength of Schedule for the big players to get acclimated. Washington and Texas will be a full-on QB battle. I’ll take Bama and Washington for the National Championship. And I think we all know who’s winning the Natty if that happens. Also, a Bama vs Texas rematch is an automatic “You’re Fucked”. We had rematches as National Championships like in 2011 and 2017, but not in non-conference. I guarantee those kinds of rematchs will come up much more often once the playoffs expand in 2024. But for the hell of it, I just want Texas or Washington to win since they are the least unlikeable teams in the field. And I don’t want the endless drama if Michigan wins it all.

# Team Δ Record Comment
1 Celtics -- 15-4
2 TWolves +2 15-4 Wolves remain top of the West. They own the best defense in the NBA and 4th in net rating while having victories over everyone else in the top 6. Rudy Gobert is the best defensive player on the planet, Towns has found his offensive footing again, and Naz Reid is Naz Reid. The King Ghidorah of big men rotation on the Wolves is loading over their opponents.
3 Nuggets -- 14-7 Despite a rash of injuries and a tough stretch of the schedule (5 games in 7 days), the Nuggets have managed to stay afloat thanks to the efforts of Nikola Jokic. The 2-time MVP has played out of his mind since Jamal Murray went down, and is currently leading the league in total points, rebounds, AND assists. However, the biggest win over this stretch was actually the game that Jokic sat, when Reggie Jackson and DeAndre Jordan turned back the clock to knock off their star-studded former team in LA. Something to watch for as the season progresses is the Nuggets' home/road splits, as the Nuggets are still undefeated at home (9-0) but are currently under .500 on the road (5-7). Much of this could be attributed to the recent road-heavy schedule coinciding with the Murray and Gordon injuries, however it's something worth keeping an eye on as the season progresses.
4 Bucks +1 14-6 Last year this team's biggest weakness was probably its half court offense in crunch time. Now it's our biggest strength. Thanks Dame, the Heart-Attack-Bucks are a lot of fun to watch.
5 Thunder +1 13-6 The Thunder continue to be on a tear, keeping up with the playoff favorites while blowing out the bottomfeeders. However, hints of their inexperience creep up from time to time like in the Dallas game where they allowed a 30-0 run after dominating the first 3 quarters. Though as is the story of this pesky Thunder team this season, they managed to close that game out with their 15-3 run. This team will make mistakes, but claw and fight until the bitter end regardless of their chances. And man, its fun to watch.
6 Magic +5 14-6 Well, you can't win them all. But tying the franchise record 9-game winning streak and being near the top of the Eastern Conference is huge. Paolo won Player of the Week and with 3 straight 30 point games, Franz is making a strong push to win it this week. The bench play has been incredible, spearheaded by the playmaking of the Slow Cooker himself, Joe Ingles and the scoring duo of Cole and Moe. It's still very early in the year but Mosley is squarely in the Coach of the Year conversation and Suggs has thrown his name as a potential All-NBA Defense candidate, helping the Magic to one of the best defenses currently. Goga and AB have been great holding their own with WCJ and Fultz out, but there's still a reason they were 3rd stringers at the start of the reason. The next few months of the schedule are gonna be rough if both are out for a majority of that time.
7 76ers -5 12-7 What are the Sixers right now? They are clearly a top tier Eastern Conference team and have shown periods where they can absolutely contend. For as much flak as Embiid received over the offseason, the team still clearly needs him to perform at the highest levels for them to succeed how they want. Maxey has been an incredible development and Batum has filled in perfectly. We can only hope the offense continues to perform at a top 3 level.
8 Suns +4 12-8 Things are starting to come together in Phoenix! The Suns are 9-2 with a healthy Devin Booker, including a 7-0 run that began on November 15th against Minnesota and came to an end when he rolled his ankle against Toronto this past Wednesday (healthy again now). The secret to this success is Point Book's playmaking. He is averaging 8.4 assists per game, which is among the Top 10 in the league. Alongside KD, who is averaging 31.0/5.8/6.4 on 51/49/90 splits, the Suns have made the quarterfinals of the IST and risen to 5th place in the West.
9 Knicks -- 12-7 Mitchell Robinson is not only the best rebounder in the NBA. He is the owner of 16 dogs. He homes his widower high school coach for free. He listens only to country music. He is the longest tenured Knick. He is my everything.
10 Kings -2 11-7 The In SZN tournament is upon us.. coming off a huge win against the defending champions the Kings are looking to take revenge on the team that has given them the most issues in the pelicans.. one of the 4 matchups that completely wreck the Kings is going up against a team that completely out bodied them.. The only way Kings will be able to win this game is if they play down hill and make their free throws.. otherwise it's gonna be a long way down from Mount Zion
11 Mavericks -4 11-8 Two Mavs welcomed newborns since the last writeup, with Dante Exum and Luka Doncic becoming fathers in the same week. The mavs lost Friday night to Memphis without Luka, who took time to be with his girlfriend and newborn, and then lost a rally against OKC with Luka's best game of the season. With the in-season tournament, the mavs benefit a bit more by missing qualification for the knockout round with matchups against two teams ranked in the 20s in Utah and Portland, which could help negate this last weekend's performance.
12 Pacers +1 10-8 The Pacers are continuing their NG+ playthrough as a glass cannon build. Rick Carlisle's offense is literally putting up the most points per game in NBA history; without Tyrese Haliburton on Saturday, Indiana still put up a whopping 144 points. On the flipside, the defense is still very much a work in progress- at best. Without much size, Indiana has been particularly susceptible to lengthy wings, and routinely hand out career nights to whomever happens to be playing the 3 on any given night. Regardless, Indiana still is very much in good standing in the East, and now turns their focus to the In-Season Tournament Quarterfinals, where they host Boston on Monday night.
13 Heat -3 11-9 Things are not going too good for the Miami Heat. The injuries are starting to add up as Bam Adebayo joins the list. Dru Smith is also out for the season while Tyler Herro is still working his way back from an ankle injury. However, players are stepping up with the absences and filling in the voids. Rookie Jaime Jaquez Jr has been doing excellent with the minutes he's been receiving and hopefully will continue to take advantage of the increase in minutes. It's beginning to look like a season where we will need to temper expectations, but hopefully as players start to return from injuries we can get back on track.
14 Lakers +1 12-9 Lakers have been alternating wins and losses in their 7 games, with a record of 4-3. While they continue to remain close to the top seed in the West(currently 7th), an early season trend has been that they take care of business against teams they supposed to beat, but don't seem to match with the other top contenders, suffering heavy losses to the Sixers and Thunder on the road. Over the last couple of weeks, the standout performers have been D'Lo shooting over 48% on threes on 5 attempts while Max Christie stepping into the starting lineup for the injured Reddish has shown great flashes as another serviceable 3&D wing. The injury bugs have slowly receded as Rui, Vando and Reddish have returned to action with just Gabe remaining on the IR. The team needs to string a few wins togehter while also sorting out the rotations as they move into the next quarter of the season and a strong way to put a stop to the narrative on not competing with top-end teams would be with a victory over the Suns at home in the upcoming In-Season tourney quarter-final.
15 Pelicans +3 11-10 The Pelicans have gone 5-3 in the last two weeks as they slowly get healthy. Zion just played in his first back-to-back in over a year. CJ McCollum and Trey Murphy are back and getting their legs under them, two players they desperately need to contribute with their three-point shot. Herb Jones continues his strong campaign for First Team All-Defense. Jordan Hawkins continues his campaign for All-Rookie First Team, and remains on pace to set the rookie three-point record a quarter of the way into the season. Today's In-Season Tournament Quarterfinal looks to be a good measuring stick. Health remains the most important factor in this young team's success, with consistency a gaining second.
16 Cavaliers -2 11-9 A 4-3 stretch since the last power rankings has been absolutely marred by a terrible looking loss to the Trailblazers has shaken the team and fans, with calls to move on from JB Bickerstaff, who had nothing to say to reporters after that loss. The Cavs gave up a 37-13 run to the trailblazers, turning a 70-58 lead into a 95-83 deficit, and that was that. It just seems like no one has a “reset” button when things aren’t going well for this offense, and it swallows itself up. Mobley and Allen shot a combined 15-23 in the game, but only took 4 FGA combined from the moment we obtained a 70-58 lead with 4 left in the 3rd. Any time your bigs are dominating the interior, feed them. Set up something for them, we’d rather try what’s been working and fail compared to changing course for whatever reason. We had a close call against Detroit on Saturday and it felt like if we lost, it could’ve been the end of JB’s time here, so we need to see some consistency if he’s going to get off the hot seat
17 Nets +3 10-9 Mikal Bridges is starting to heat up after a slow start to the season. He's averaging 28 ppg in his last 6 games on extremely high efficiency. Continuing his scoring will be key for this team as Cam Thomas has returned and adds his own scoring punch every night. While many thought defense would be the identity of this group, the Nets have come out with a scorching offense focused on shooting threes and creating open looks for role players. Ben Simmons has stayed out and may very well be a figment of our imagination at this point - let's see what happens with him as his theoretical fit with this roster is close to ideal.
18 Clippers +3 9-10 Apply to be the Clippers Ranker here
19 Hawks -2 9-10 Get better soon, Jalen :(
20 Warriors -1 9-11 Two brutal single possession losses where the Warriors had the game in the driver seat is the team in a nutshell this year. Klay has shot better, CP3 is finding his groove and Wiggins had a huge game before his latest injury. Kerr tends to ride with his guys instead of the riding the hot hand which may have cost the Warriors the game against Sac. There's some good to take away but no doubt it's been a disappointing start to the season.
21 Rockets -5 8-9 After a good run of games, the Rockets are performing closer to what people expected pre-season. Although not much should be expected of Amen when he returns, he may just provide enough minutes to give the others some rest and increase focus.
22 Raptors -- 9-11 I have had faith in the team making it above .500 at some point during the season. Did it happen during these 2 weeks? No. However, the wins against some great opponents have been there all along. Even way back during game 1 of the season against Minnesota. Beating Dallas, Milwaukee, Phoenix is impressive. Being 5 and 9 against teams below .500 is not. It's still too early to forsee where the team ends up in April. The good is that the tough schedule is lessening but the team needs to stop falling behind early. The tendency to play down to their opponents probably isn't going away because this is ultimately a .500 team.
23 Bulls -- 7-14 We have won 2 in a row for the first time all season, and watching this team has been kind of fun again. With Zach Lavine out, Coby White has been able to show out and lead the Bulls to victories over the Bucks and Pelicans. We still aren't a good team by any means, but at least young guys are getting a chance to step up.
24 Jazz -- 7-13 Utah are 6-2 against NOLA, POR and MEM but have lost 10 straight against the rest of the league. Ranking 23rd for ORTG and 25th for ORTG things don’t seem to be clicking as well as last season. It seemed that turnover issues were addressed during Keyonte’s early starts but the issue has resurfaced with the team recording 18.6 TO per game this past fortnight. The last team to average over 18.6 TO per game for a season was the Bulls in 1999-00 for reference. Rookies Brice Sensabaugh (17/6/4) and Taylor Hendricks (17/7 with 1.2 stl, 1.9 blks) who have been hooping in the G-League should expect a call up and more minutes at this pace as the Jazz focus on youth.
25 Grizzlies -- 5-14 In one of the most unfun seasons in recent Grizzlies history, we finally saw the team in their last few games show some heart and effort. Vince Williams Jr has looked like prime Dennis Rodman (not really, but compard to the rest of the team he's been the best rebounder) and newly signed 10 day Haylen Nowell has provided a much needed spark off the bench. The story remains the same though, we have two guys who are starting NBA caliber players, and the rest of the roster is made up of G-League players. Only 7 more games until Ja comes back, is the damage already done? Find out next time!
26 Hornets -- 6-12 Well, it happened. LaMelo Ball, off to a scintillating start (32-7-9 on 49-43-87 during the last 10 games), did his ankle again, severely spraining it (wear braces, please). And with that, any hopes I had for this season evaporated. Time will tell how long he's out but I'm not expecting anything until January. Luckily Kupchak filled the cupboard with Ish Smith and Frank Ntilikina (also injured) at backup PG. The team defense is awful. Clifford is an awful coach. They don't shoot the 3 well or defend the 3 well, using an outdated system. We brought back #0, a very good player, but a very bad human being. This team disgusts me, most of the time, and without Ball, they are borderline unwatchable. Watch for a Rozier or Hayward trade as we get closer to the deadline. Positives - Miller was the right pick over Scoot, and NSJ the other rookie looks good too. I am already moving on to the NBA Draft scouting... but hey, we'll always have that Boston win.
27 Trail Blazers -- 6-13
28 Wizards +1 3-16 The Washington Wizards continue to be the butt of the joke in the NBA, despite being the second worst team in the NBA from a record perspective. Normally, I try to balance the line of "somewhat analytical" and "somewhat comedic," but the reality is that if I don't say 'Jordan Poole is the reason for AIDS and World Hunger', this snippet won't be read. Transparently, it is a little weird to watch the amount of hate that is directed towards Poole. He is on a team that no one watches, doesn't talk much in the media and hasn't been a "toxic teammate" -- despite poorly clipped arm-chair analysis going viral on Twitter and there being no signs or reports of internal frustration. Did he just steal everyone's girl and that's why people are upset? Seriously, it is reaching the point where it is just excessive, to where I actually want to defend Jordan Poole. Anyway, the team isn't good and frankly there isn't much to watch. Kyle Kuzma continues to have good performances but doesn't do enough to warrant "franchise player potential" praise. Bilal Coulibaly is currently in market correction territory, with the restraints appropriately being put back on as he continues to develop on the offensive end. The Wizards are not good, they're not fun, go back to not discussing us.
29 Spurs -1 3-16 Whelp, still in the doldroms in Spurs land. Wemby's play has turned promisingly more consistent of late, he seems to be forcing things less and making more deliberate moves on the floor, but that's been about the lone bright spot on this long losing streak. Sochan balled out against Atlanta as well, and he's generally been looking more and more steady at PG as the season has unfolded. The team is still losing, mostly on the back of absolutely atrocious third quarter play, but they've also been competitive at least. At some stage you have to hope we'll learn how to hold these leads we've been getting, but for now we're still firmly in Process mode. The Spurs play @MIN, CHI, @HOU, LAL, LAL, NOP over the next two weeks.
30 Pistons -- 2-18 The Lions have more wins (11) than the Pistons do (9) in calendar 2023. No Win November turned out pretty well - perfect, in fact. 17 consecutive losses and counting! Our only obvious 'winnable' games in December would be vs the Grizzlies on Wednesday or the Jazz (the latter of which would stop our loss streak at 24) but we may not win again in 2023. At our current pace we are on track to have the worst 82 game season in NBA history. We are neck and neck with the Carhlotte Bobcats in the lockout shortened year for worst win % in a single season. I'm sure we will find somebody great with the 5th pick in the draft to be our next messiah though... There is no leadership for this team. We had a player's only meeting called by team leader Isaiah Stewart (not Cade) which lead to a blowout loss by 19 to the Wizards. Troy Weaver's biggest moves of the offseason were getting broken down Monte Morris (who hasn't played a game this year from... a hamstring strain?) and Joe Harris who has fallen off a cliff for anybody, but especially anyone earning $19.9 million this year. Monty Williams, with his mega deal coaching contract, stated after loss 15 that "we need to do a better job at spacing" in his post game presser, as if he has no control over it. BUT WAIT A SECOND... novel idea here... a coach can adjust lineups to do so. Despite this, he continues to let former 5th overall pick who actually WANTED TO BE IN DETROIT, Jaden Iven, ride the pine more often than not. I'm sure he's learning to refine his game from the sidelines. Monty plays James Wiseman and Stanley Umude in clutch spots and has shocked Pikachu face when we let the other team go on a 10-0 run (or similar). I guess I'd milk it too if I was guaranteed as much money as Monty if I sucked at my job though... We also have a beat writer, James Edwards III, who decides to be a lap dog and not call out any of the problems with out team instead content to play lapdog to our FO. James, go suck an egg... Lastly there's Cade. Raw numbers continue to look ok, but he can never find a game where his TS% and turnover numbers both look good. Is it that he can't play with these dudes? Is he just a bad to mediocre player getting lots of minutes? I lean toward the opinion right now that he is going to fit better off ball, as he has looked great in these moments, with secondary ball handling duties. A bit of a downer for a #1 overall pick who also doesn't seem to be showing as many leadership qualities as we'd hope for either (again, refer back to Stew calling the team meeting, not Cade). Will he still be good? Yeah I still think he'll be a future all-star, but not the superstar our fanbase was hoping for... Only 1/4 of the season done... life is pain.

2023.12.04 15:45 slow_wheels Deck Guide: Anvir Keltoc Control

This deck is fun as hell and you will love playing it. Every game with it will make you smarter, healthier, and better looking.
Hey Y'all, I'm Soda. As a lowly 1.4k I don't pretend to be an expert on the game, but I love this deck and hopefully this writeup can help a few people enjoy it as much as I do. Shoutout to DescryGaming and Bjthebrave for their awesome content that has helped me thus far, you should definitely check out their work.

1 Why this deck?

This has a lot going for it:
It's not for everyone though:

2 Playstyle

2.1 Win Condition

This deck launches with a stone-empowered Reclaim the Stars, which provides so much value that you overwhelm your opponent in subsequent turns. You typically kill the opposing hero with a combination of:
RtS also allows you to grab board control in a way that your opponent can't recover from, by allowing the following to come out for 0 energy:
Obviously don't go overboard vs. Orks or they will just clear the board and laugh at you.
How to lose
You typically lose in one of the following ways:

2.2 General Play

My general strategy is as follows:
The key thing here is how late RtS goes down. Coming back to our win/loss conditions, we want to make sure that RtS draws 5 absolute bangers that will bury the opponent. Your hero power doesn't just prune your hand for 'what you want now', it stacks your deck for 'what you want next', so you can prime a great draw.
Secondly, this usually means you are playing RtS with 2-3 stones left over, so you can immediately drop a SpiritseeVengeful Wraithguard for max value and board control.
Thirdly, faster decks are starting to gas-out, with maybe 2-3 cards left in hand. This makes them much less likely to recover the board.
Finally, this also gives us the freedom to spend stones for card advantage, and worry about the RtS bill later. I have no issue dropping a turn 8 Vengeful Wraithguard that stops me from getting a turn 9 RtS, as long as it is going to get card value.
If you get as far as T12 you can obviously play Infinity Circuit and RtS all at once.
As mentioned above this deck stabilises really well, even at low health. Protect your HP as much as possible, don't attack face unless you have a road to lethal, but don't be afraid to use attacks to clear the board. This feeds into the tenet of playing for card advantage. For example: T1 Firstborn comes down, you can just punch it and use your talent, then either kill it when it attacks, or punch it again. Congrats! You've saved your Wind Rider to go 1:1 into their Primaris Inceptor when it comes down.

2.2.1 The Hero Talent

This is what makes the deck work. It provides nearly all of your stones pre-T7, it prunes your hand for the tools you need to survive, and stacks your deck for the finisher. Remember:

3.1 Notable Inclusions

Bladestorm
The most 'out there' card in the deck. This can really go off on your Reclaim the Stars + 1 turn, giving reach to end the game, or tempo to lock in board control.
Witchblade
Still trying these out, after seeing them in Bjthebrave & The Ecclesiarch's excellent forgeclash series. Their talent is powerful, so they are unlikely to stick long enough to use it, but their stat line is good enough to force awkward trades if you drop them on curve.
Got my first ever win against a top50 UM when one of these guys stuck.
Aspect Shrine
Great defence card from the forge. Auto-pick.

3.2 Notable Exclusions

1x Hemlock Wraithfighter
Great card and one of your top finishers in the deck, but the second one is usually dead-weight in your hand. Also sucks to draw two in a hail-mary RtS, because you probably don't have the energy to use them and they could have been something useful instead.
You might add a second if you face loads of necrons.
1x Striking Scorpion
Probably controversial, but this card never feels good to play. There's a good case to cut the final copy. The main role of this card (afaik) is to pose an 'unanswered question' to the opponent that stops them from developing their board. Unfortunately:
1x Banshee Mask
Weakest "Good card" in the deck, so it got cut to make room for bigger hitters. Shines when:
Other matchups, i generally use it to stall something so that they continue to develop the board without hitting me as much, then Eldritch Storm the next turn.
Guardian Defender
Seen these played by DescryGaming because you can ship them from your hand to make space for RtS, but I actually prefer a much later RtS (T9+) so this doesn't benefit me.
Warp Spider
Tempted to cut the other Striking Scorp for one of these. Coming back to the 'unanswered question' role above, if they don't develop their board and don't clear then you can smash face, re-play it, and pose the same question again.
The extra point of health takes the spider out of range of Sternguard/Gunship/many blast abilities too.
Worse against flyers though.
Hosts of the Dead
Don't own it, but im not sure I would want it to gobble up that many spirit stones.
Qelenaris
Also don't own, but stones aren't hard to come by in this deck. A situation where you need more stones AND have 1 to pick up AND you have this guy ready to come down, seems like magical christmas land to me. Body is fine, but for 6 Energy you need them to do something on the turn they hit the board.

4 Matchups

This probably all goes in the bin once the patch comes out, but here are my thoughts, such as they are:

4.1 Ultramarines

Mulligan Targets: Flankers, Storm
The board tends to stay pretty steady here. They're usually waiting for you to play something for them to react to, rather than dropping a flanker on an empty board, so you both end up with fat hands. NB: This might not hold true at higher ranks.
The key to this matchup is allocating tools to the right job. Crimson hunter stays primed in hand until the Inceptor Sgt comes down. Vengeful Wraithguard is waiting to drill a JudiciaImpulsor. As UM are looking to respond to you, try and bait out their big pieces. Spiritseer is great for this, so drop it when you can follow up and clear their board-clears.
If you can spend HP via hero attacks to save your tools for their allocated job, then you can do some real work here. Big shoutout for Evasive Manoeuvres here, they can't drop 10dmg Death from Above on your head if you've got this up.

4.1.1 Marneus

The same as above, but you have to be extremely disciplined. Assume that he has the exact answer he wants in those enormous hands. Pun intended.
Tends to push less face damage early, so don't put Evasive Manoeuvres up too early. You're better off keeping your hero attacks available and camo-ing later, never to be seen again.

4.1.2 Tiggy

Mulligan Targets: I'll keep evasive, but I won't search for it
Most Tiggy's can be played as above, but if you get the (rarer) face-Tiggy, get the Evasive Manoeuvres up early and just sit behind it.

4.2 Necrons

I'm pretty bad at this one, so i don't have loads to say about it. Try and have a board presence in-place ahead of Lychguard landing so that you can ping it to death.
Let me know if you figure it out.

4.3 Eldar

Mulligan Targets: Storm, Flankers
Mirror matchup is pretty rare for me so I can't speak to it. I assume we'll see more of the Eliac post-balance, but most of them are pretty underwhelming today. That leaves the main tempo build.

4.3.1 Medreyal Ghaelyn

This is a pretty fun one, especially as it's almost impossible to tell which version they're playing until they play RtS (or not).
Be disciplined in your role. You are the control, you are not the beatdown. Play for card advantage and don't give up your shroud runners to snipe stones, let them have their stones and you should out-value them later.
Crimson Hunters can decide this game, as they trade into each other so viciously. Try and bait theirs out first, then drop yours. Don't drop it on anything except the Hunter or Wraithfighter unless you're really desperate.

4.4 Orks

Real variation here depending on the warlord you're facing.

4.4.1 Ghaz

Mulligan Targets: Storm, Banshee. Keep mask if you get it. Keep 1 Wraithguard or Spiritseer if you go second.
This has two versions: Punch face fast, punch face faster. Orks, amiryt? In either case you just need to slow the guy down. Spend your stones and cards with abandon and get to T8 in a good spot, then you win.

4.4.2 Face-Rippa

Mulligan Targets: Go hard for Storm, nothing else matters
This guy is hunting big combo turns, so don't waste your storms until you see one. You can lose on T4 if he drops a T3 Horde.
Between these turns, keep an eye out for card value. Because the board is so sparse, he can get some really solid value from Mukkin About, so don't hesitate to try and screen it with your Wind Riders. Additionally, don't overcommit your RtS turn, as you can get your pants pulled down by Will of Gork. Play out enough to threaten him, but keep something back in your hand to replace the board. It's a 7 mana spell, so you should be able to keep hold of the tempo and keep your foot on the gas.

4.5 Chaos

Mulligan Targets: 2-3 cost Flankers, Banshee Mask
The absolutely 100% most important critical thing here is not let anything stick to their board. Trade your cards, your HP and your firstborn son to keep it clear, even if it's poor card value.
If you do that, you should have them by the scruff of the neck by T7 and they'll be begging you to get RtS down and put them out of their misery. Warp Talons are the most awkward item on the agenda here, and they can be buffed hard, but don't be afraid to eat some face damage if you can set up a way to kill them once they exit stealth (eg. a scorpion).

5 Future Work

I'm sure that there are things to be tinkered with here and there to drive more value. Future experiments include:

6 Conclusion

Congrats to anyone who made it this far, I'd love to hear your thoughts. If you can show me where I'm wrong on any of this, it will instantly make me a better player, so please get stuck in!

AITA for selling my PS5 rather than sharing it with my step brothers? Dec 17, 2021
Post by u/Throwaway_dadisadoof
My (15, M) mum and dad met and briefly dated while they were both studying at uni. My mum gave birth to me after they had broken up and had to sue my dad for child support. I was raised by my mum and had virtually nothing to do with my dad throughout my childhood. My mum was an international student and her family cut ties with her due to the circumstances of my birth. Tragically, two years ago, I lost my mum to cancer and thus I was placed under the care of my dad.
My dad has remarried and has two sons (5 and 7) with his wife. It wasn’t a bad arrangement at first, but we were all essentially strangers. I was given a bedroom to myself and we shared some meals but other than kept to myself.
About 10 months ago, I was lucky enough to score a casual job at an aged care facility as IT support. It was stupid easy money as it involves installing and maintaining a dozen or so common PCs used by the residents plus running basic computing workshops.
I ended up accruing a whole lot of disposable income in a short time. Stupidly, instead of just keeping quiet about it, I decked out my room with a new TV, headphone and a PS5. Obviously, this setup was of great interest to my two step-brothers. Initially, my rule was that they could play the PS5 anytime I wasn’t using it but I would get first dibs if I wanted to play or use my TV. I was also super accommodating by buying an extra controller (which I didn’t need) and several kid friendly games that they wanted to play. I eventually had to change the rule to ‘only play when I was there’ because the 5 y.o destroyed one my controllers through spilling juice on it. This is where the drama started.
They whined to my ‘parents’ who then ‘ordered’ me to place the PS5 in the living room. I refused stating that I had purchased it with my own money. This led to their argument that I have too much money and should contribute rent, utilities and food money. I called their bluff and said ‘sure, draw up a contract and I’ll get a lawyer to review it to ensure it complies with the Family Law Act’. My dad then told the boys that he was going to buy a separate PS5 for the boys for Christmas but the dude is clueless about the global shortage.
Finally last night, after realising that he had zero change of buying one for close to RRP, my dad threatened me to either voluntarily gift my PS5 to the boys for Christmas or he would toss it in the bin while I was at school. I was so pissed that I went on Facebook Market place and sold the PS5.
The boys found out today and were devastated. I feel really bad because they shouldn’t be punished for this shitshow. My ‘parents’ are in their room talking about me and I’m sitting here in my room. AITA? How could I have handled this better?
VERDICT: NOT THE ASSHOLE
Update 1 Dec 18, 2021
Wow! This blew up overnight. Firstly, thanks to all the kind strangers out there given me your positive encouragement and support. It’s quite humbling that so many of took time to read my story and chose to provide positive support. Some people were after an update of the situation.
I’m at work now but my step-mum had a chat with me this morning and it was quite positive. She said she didn’t know about my existence until right before I came to live with them and so it caused a huge rift between her and dad. She apologised for projecting that onto me and not being more welcoming. She also didn’t know about my dad’s threats and told me that it won’t happen on her watch. My half-brothers also admitted to her about the juice incident. She said that she is going to get the boys a Switch for Christmas and she offered to pay me the difference between RRP and getting a new PS5. I probs won’t take the money but at least it’s a step forward. This was the longest conversation I have ever had with her too btw.
No comms from my dad yet, lol.
To answer some common questions:
*1. My bank account is entirely in my name only (Australia). No one else has ability to view or access the balance. I actually don’t think my dad’s demand for rent was about money, they both earn a good salary. He’s just butt hurt that I’m not reliant on his money.
*2. Yes, I really am 15, lol! I typed out my post in Word and so that it could be spell and grammar checked - maybe that’s what confused people?
*3. I get $AU27.50 an hour on a casual contract, with additional loading for weekends/phs. The operations manager at the Aged Care facility is super chill and allows me to schedule my hours around school, I just have a cap that I can’t go over. She lets me do my homework on the clock and I get free meals from cafeteria. If I help the residents on non-facility devices they usually tip me (in cash or sometimes cookies, lol). I've got a fair bit saved up because I don't really have any expenses.
*4. I’ve got a shoebox of documents from when my mum passed. I think my mum’s assets is looked after by a trustee firm which will be turned over to me at 18. The law firm managing the will had previously explained this to me but I wasn’t really paying attention at the time. I’ve got to still go through everything.
*5. I sold PS5 for a tidy profit, even with the cost of the damaged controller. I’m not desperate for one atm so I’ll just sign up for a waiting list again so I won’t need to take up my step-mum’s offer.
This is probably my last post on this issue. Thanks again for the love everyone!
Update 2 (Dec 26, 2021
So we've got a gathering with the extended family today. This is the first time I've met any of them due to COVID (and they've all been super lovely to me). My step-mum showed them my original post and they are all getting stuck into dad. My uncle (dad's younger brother) has set up a reddit account for him and he's doubling down as he thinks Redditors will take his side when they read his account of it. I'm not going to link or read his post but people have been telling me it's quite a bloodbath.

AITA for asking my son to share his console with his brothers instead of keeping it in his room?
A few days ago, my bio-son Jonah (not real name) posted a biased and frankly defamatory post about an incident in my home regarding a PS5. My wife was kind enough to share the post and comments with our entire extended family at our Christmas gathering so apparently now I’m a huge asshole.
My brother suggested that I post here to set record straight and give people both sides of the issue.
*Firstly, I never actually intended to charge Jonah rent. His job gives him essentially 100% disposable income purely because he lives in our household. He used this money to deck out his room, buy brand shoes, buy the latest iPhone etc, all for himself. I couldn't care less about how he spends his money, but it does set a poor example for my other two boys. The last straw was when Jonah set a login password for the PS5. I basically told him that if he’s not willing to share then why should I give him a free ride?
*My son should be grateful. While we share DNA, I only dated his mum, May (not actual name) for all of 5 months back in uni. I was very clear with May that I didn’t want kids but apparently consent doesn’t go both ways. May put me through legal hell and ended up costing me tens of thousands of dollars over the years in child support, setting my own goals back.
*Instead of letting Jonah end up in a group home, I stepped up and took him in when May got sick. Instead of gratitude, I constantly have to deal with disrespect and attitude.
*Because of Jonah, my wife thinks I breached her trust all for something that happened well before I met her.
*While the boys previously did have access to PS5, he now won’t let them play it now that school is finished for the year unless he's home (which he never is). I gave him the ultimate of either sharing the console or no one gets to play it. In response, he pulls the most passive aggressive move ever and sold it so now no-one plays it.
So listen, how am I the asshole here? I’ve taken in this kid into my home (a kid who btw will receive a sizeable inheritance in a few years thanks to May’s estate). I’ve given him a home, a family and fund his lifestyle, all at the cost of my own relationship.
In return, I haven't asked for a cent, and he won’t treat me with respect nor follow my rules, but somehow, I’m the giant asshole whose in the study typing this out instead of enjoying Christmas with my extended family.
Instead of attacking me, I’m hoping people will now give their fair opinion of the situation based on seeing both sides of the story.
He also provided a heated update in the comments:
Ok, clearly this hasn’t gone down the direction I thought it would. Clearly some of you have issues with comprehension or just can’t be bothered reading my comments fully.
- I want to be clear. I NEVER threatened to collect rent from Jonah. I don’t need his part time work money or about his inheritance money. I make a very good salary, probably more than the vast majority of people who use reddit. I simply tried to explain to him that he has all this disposable income because he doesn’t have to worry about basic needs!
- I didn’t explain it properly at the time because we were arguing but my intention wasn’t for Jonah to give his PS5 to the kids permanently. I just wanted it kept in the common area until I can buy another one for the kids. Jonah never told me about the controller, if he had, of course I would have replaced it, that’s not an issue.
- I expected him to not be so selfish to his brothers. Keeping it in his room under password protection is so rude. Jonah gets home really late most days so my kids are in bed by the time he gets back.
- I won’t debate the nuances about sex and custody. I’m not an idiot. I understand perfect consent and parental responsibilities. I will just say that there is a large gap between consenting to sex vs consenting to having a child, I get that our current laws are against me on this one.
- I didn’t intend to ‘lie’ to my wife. Jonah and May were something way into the distant past for me. Our settlement agreement was very clear on that. I had absolutely zero communication with May or Jonah for at least the ten years prior to finding about her illness. My child support was at a fixed rate so I had actually paid her out a lump sum that was supposed to take care of him until 18. It wasn’t like it was getting taken out of pay every week.
- As far as I knew, I was never supposed to hear from Jonah or May ever again. Why would I tell my wife about something like that?

AITA for intercepting and eating my son’s food delivery while he was grounded?
Posted by: u/NotanAHafterall_1987
My eldest son (16) is undergoing a hormonal fuelled rebellious phase.
His behaviour consists of things like rolling his eyes when I talk, back chatting when I tell him to do something, over emphasising putting on his headphones when I enter the room and a whole laundry list of other passive aggressive behaviours.
It’s was his birthday yesterday and he was going to go out with his friends this weekend to celebrate by paintballing. However, when I got home from work yesterday I noticed that he had failed to do some chores I had set him and then did the whole headphones routine when I started telling him off for it.
I got so sick of his attitude that I threatened to ground him for 2 weeks which means not letting him leave the house except for work. My words clearly cut through his headphones and it dawned on him that he would not be allowed to go paintballing this weekend. So he took off his headphones and said, “Go fuck yourself” and then shut himself in his room. This naturally led to his actual grounding.
The grounding didn't seem to phase him as he spends a lot of time in his room anyway. I cut off his devices from our home wifi but he works around this by having own hotspot. He refused to come out for dinner last night when my wife asked him to and has basically barricaded himself in his room.
At 10pm last night, he ordered himself a meal via a delivery app. Again, he is clearly been passive aggressive here, flaunting his independence as he has a perfected lovely meal in the fridge made by my wife. I was still up watching TV so intercepted the delivery and ate the meal myself. At some point my son must have come out and seen me but retreated back to his room without saying anything.
My wife things I am a major AH for eating the meal but I think it comes part and parcel with the grounding. My wife also things I'm too harsh with due to the grounding. I'll let him go to paintball if he apologises.
So am I the AH here reddit?

Hi everyone! Sorry for hijacking the top comment. This is my dad's post! Thanks for everyone support.
I don't think I need to add any more fuel to the fire here, the post and the comments largely speak for themselves.
I just wanted to give a quick update to everyone that I'm 100% fine and ok.
My step-mum 'vetoed' my punishment so I'm all good to go out with my friends this weekend.
One of my new uncles has asked me to stay with them for a while which is also super cool.
So I'm doing well and loving life. These comments are hilarious!
Much love!

I'm sure many of you would be ecstatic to know that my marriage may be over. I came home this evening to find that my wife and my two younger boys have left, probably at her mother's house (my oldest is still staying at my brother's house since beginning of Jan).
This has hit me hard. As redditors now like remind me on a daily basis, I now know I have been a shitty husband and father. I have some self reflection to do. I am stubborn but my wife has always been there to talk me down. I guess she has had enough.
The only communication I have is a text from my wife saying "she wants a divorce" and that her lawyers will get in touch regarding "separation arrangements". I have tried calling but it keeps going to voicemail, same as my in-laws.
I want to apologise. I want to offer to go to counselling or therapy like she asked. If I still can't get through to her via phone, I am thinking of going to my in-laws house. I have to try to at least talk to her.
I guess my redditors hate me, but I welcome any suggestions on if there is anything I can try.
Aita for buying my wife a new dress? Feb 2, 2022

> My (M,34) wife (F,29) and I regularly attend formal functions (~once every 2-3 weeks). I work as an consultant and these events are a great way to attract new business and for network. My wife generally dislikes these things but she puts on a good front for me. It's generally a good night involving lots of food, alcohol and socialising while our kids are looked after by a sitter.
Due to the pandemic, we haven't had any for about two years but they are now starting to come back. On a function two weeks ago, my wife came downstairs dressed in a pant suit and her hair in a simple ponytail. Don't get me wrong, she still looked amazing but pretty much all the other ladies wear ball gowns or cocktail attire. When we talked about it afterwards she told me that she was sick of the hours of hair, makeup, nails and preparation and that if I insisted she go, she will dress how she pleases.
I tried to explain that these things are a necessarily part of my industry but she wouldn't budge. She counters that she never drags me to any of her work functions, which I responded that we should compare payslips which was clearly the wrong thing to say and she left the room.
After the argument, I tried to make it up to her so I ordered a very nice and expensive gown for her to wear for the next function. I even took it to our tailors for adjustment as they know her measurements. When I presented the dress to her she was initially very happy and said the dress was 'gorgeous', but as soon as I mentioned that she should wear it for our next function she immediately blew up at me.
She thinks I am being manipulative and going against her wishes. I thought I was just offering her a nice gesture. AITA?

My wife wants to divorce me and won't talk to me. How can I win her back? - recovered with rareddit Feb 7, 2022
Posted by u/NotanAHafterall_1987
Hi all, I need some advice about how to win back my wife and I am genuinely willing to do anything.
My wife (F,29) and I (M,34) of 8 years had been having serious relationship issues over the last few years. The main area friction between us is that I have a son (M,16) from a previous teenage fling that I never told her about (we also have another two young children together). My 16 y.o had to come live with us about 3 years ago because his biological mother died. His presence in our lives caused a lot tension between my wife and I because she felt I majorly breached her trust. We argued more and more about minor things until last Thursday I came home to an empty house. I am devastated. My wife is the love of my life and has always been the main support centre in my life.
I tried calling her but she kept sending me to mail. She sent me a text saying that she wasn’t ready to talk, but was filing for a divorce and to wait to hear from her lawyers regarding separation mediation. I am a wreck. I would do anything to have her back, including counselling and therapy (she had previously asked me to attend but I was too arrogant to take it up). I felt that if I could just talk to her, I can have a chance to explain and we can get through this.
The next day I did something stupid. I went to her workplace (accounting firm) with her favourite takeaway lunch to try to talk to her. She must have worded up the reception staff because they adamantly refused to buzz me into the office. Her staff even went as far as calling for building security. Not wishing to cause further drama I left voluntarily.
That night, I doubled down on my stupidity, I tried to visit her at her parent’s house with a bunch of gifts for her and the kids. My MIL answered through intercom but wouldn’t let me in. I was so frustrated and emotional that I broke down at their door, basically making a scene and refusing to leave. Later my brother turned up (I assume my wife called), he tried to convince me to go home but we ended up in a shouting match. He eventually tried to manhandle me back to my car so I got into a physical altercation with him but I left when my father in law came out and threated to call the police on me.
Things have really gone downhill since then. This morning, two police constables turned up to where I work with a provisional domestic violence order along with a summons to attend court for a permanent order. I was in shock and as a result was inadvertently quite rude to the constables. This put them offside. I am a contractor working at a client site, and so when my client asked the constables what the matter was about, they said they “couldn’t say” for privacy reasons but then immediately handed out business cards with their “Family Violence Liaison Unit” title embossed at the top. So now my firm's senior partner has waved me off going back to the client site and I may be fired.
I feel like this is the wake up call I needed. I know I have been a narcistic a-hole and am read to change. What can I do to talk to her? To show her I am determined to be better? I don’t want to just end it like this. I know that if I have a chance to explain myself, to apologise, to promise to work really hard on my marriage, to work on my narcissism, to go to therapy, to go to counselling, whatever my wife needs to forgive me and we can get on with our lives.
Our court hearing is in a few weeks, so I am thinking of turning up early with some expensive jewellery and try to talk to my wife before the hearing. My solicitor has told me this is a bad idea but I feel like I need to do something. I don’t want to negotiate with my wife across a court room, I just want to remind her how much I love her and how much she means to me.
What can I do to win my wife back? Has anyone else being in this situation?
TLDR: My wife has left me and won't talk to me. I caused a scene at her work and now there is potential legal action against me. I want to win her back.
Update:
I get it, its over. You guys are right. I've fucked up. Irrevocably this time. I've lost my family and likely will lose my job. I've always tried to control everything in my life. Its worked for me in the past because my family is wealthy and they've fixed things for me.
But my wife and brother must have spoken to my parents because they said I can't use the law firm my family has on retainer for my DVO or upcoming separation proceedings anymore.
I'll hire my own solicitor as soon as stuff starts opening. I'll seek mental help too. Most importantly, I'll leave my wife alone.
Thanks for your comments and advice.

Hi everyone, a lot has happened over the last few months. My step-mum has been reading all of these posts and comments. She saw that he's now saying that he will change and hoping to gain some sympathy of it.
She emailed me this today to pass on to people can decide if he deserves any. I haven't edited it anyway, just copy and pasted it.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- “Hi everyone.
I am not a reddit user but I have been following the messages that my stepson and my soon-to-to-be-ex has written. I would also like to thank the hundreds of kind people who immediately saw through his bullshit and gave him some hard truths. I am also grateful of all the well wishers to me, my sons and Jonah.
Apart from the few incidents last week, which isn’t the complete picture btw, he has stopped trying to contact me directly. But I am hearing from mutual friends that he is on a mission to garner sympathy, trying lay blame for his life falling apart everywhere except for himself. I note that he is throwing a pity party for himself on reddit too, hoping to get people to congratulate him on how much he has changed! Ha!
I want to set the record that this ‘man’ DESERVES NO SYMPATHY!!! I have been with him for 8 years. Yes, I realise that I am a naïve idiot and I take my part of the blame for not only sticking around but for having two (now three!) incredible, light of my life, adorable children with this ‘man’.
I will lay out the autopsy of my marriage and let people judge for themselves.
*I met him when I was 21, a broke uni student trying to make it on my own. I met him while working at my part-time job. I was taken in by his looks, his wealth and his confidence.
*We got married within 3 months. I was stupid and vain, tricking myself into thinking he was the prince to whisk me off to a better life.
After our wedding, the manipulation started. He wanted to convince me not to continue my studies. “You don’t need to babe. I’ll look after you. You just look pretty and look after *my house.”
*After the birth of our first child. I took 12 weeks off for maternity leave. I was pretty established in my job then. He again, tried to convince me to be a stay at home mum. He tried to gaslight me, saying that “it’s not fair on your son”, and that his fondest memories as a child was with his mum at home.
*Throughout the marriage he would constantly use his wealth as leverage. My dad, bless him, is a good tradie but terrible businessman. Early on my ex arranged a loan through his family trust to rescue my dad’s business. My ex would then gently remind me of that fact every time we disagreed about something.
He would constantly monitor my credit card usage. He would question me on certain transactions that weren’t to his liking. Eg. Fashion, gym, hair, botox, make up = completely fine. But a latte and a muffin? “Who the hell* did you have a coffee with?”
He would constantly provide input on my appearance. As an example, he would show me pictures of celebrities and tell me that it would be *nice if I dressed and did my make up more like that celebrity. He would also make offhand comments about what I ate. “Are you sure you want to order that in a main size? Didn’t you have a sugary drink already at lunch?” Or my personal pet hate, “I think my wife will have the salad tonight.”
*At the industry awards or charity things we went to, he would tell me who I should talk to. I can’t tell you how many inane, vapid conversations I’ve had with other spouses about the latest bags or some other bullshit winter collection. I once made a joke about him in front some of his colleagues and he scolded me like a child on the car ride home.
*You all know about him hiding Jonah’s existence from me. What you may not know is that he lied about Jonah’s mum and made her out to a gold digger who tricked him into having a kid. This is why my initial reception of Jonah was definitely not warm and I am ashamed for it. He’s a really decent and sweet boy and is so kind and patient with my two boys. He deserves better than his dad.
I can go on for pages and pages. This list doesn’t even begin to describe the level of narcissism, manipulation and control he had over me for the last 8 years. I know I am equally to blame for this but I’m done with it now.
I wasn’t strong enough. I wasn’t confident enough. I didn’t want to say no to a ‘man’ who gave me everything. Even now, at weak moments, I feel myself start to miss him and wonder if I should just endure it. That maybe he’ll change just enough that I may be able to live with it. But then his recent fake pity party bullshit snapped me right out of it.
I don’t want his money. I don’t want him. I just want my kids and I to live our lives' free of him.
Thank you for reading.”
The son made a comment
in regards to his living situation and his dad trying to call him:
I'm living with my uncle and cousins at the moment.
My dad has texted/called me a few times but only as way to talk to my step-mum.

I'm grieving the life I used to have Feb 12, 2022
I had it all, I had everything. A beautiful wife, gorgeous kids, an awesome house in the suburb, a well paying job and a bright future.
It all came crumbling down last week. My wife left with the kids while I was at work. It took me by surprise. Sure we argued about little things like any other couple but I had no idea she would hit the exit button so suddenly. I am a good provider, I have nice shiny things and we were (I thought) a great couple. Sometimes these things just aren't enjoy.
Now I'm sitting alone, in a house filled with nothing but memories and silence.
The most painful part is that I feel like I can get my life back on track with a gentle nudge. Unfortunately my wife won't give me a chance to talk 1 on 1. Next time I see her will likely be on the other side of a conference room with lawyers.
Maybe I've changed, maybe we've both changed. All I know is that I still love her and it hurts ever day. I just want my life back.
Aita for insisting my girlfriend be allowed to pickup my children June 29, 2022
I (35,M) have recently separated (divorced not finalised) with my wife (31,F). We have two primary school aged boys together which I have custody of one weekend a fortnight (Friday to Monday morning).
I work fairly long hours and every week my team goes out for dinnedrinks on Friday night. It's important team bonding and I feel these sessions are a critical part of my job.
My girlfriend, "Jane" (25,F) is a primary school teacher from a different school to my boys. I recently filled out a form with my boys school to designate Jane as a guardian for purposes of picking up and dropping off my boys at school. I commute the other way to my work on Mondays where as Jane works at a school near our boys' school. With the current custody arrangements, it's only 1 pick up and 1 drop off a fortnight if Jane was to do it.
Unbeknownst to me, the school sent the form to my ex-wife for her signature. My ex is now super mad at me. From my perspective, Jane is a perfectly acceptable person to look after our boys as she is my girlfriend, a qualified educator and the boys get along well with her.
She only has to pick them up and drop them off and maybe look after them for less than 2 hours without my presence.
My ex says I'm an asshole and saying that I am trying to shirk my responsibilities. I don't think that is fair. My ex is going through her lawyers to specifically write to me saying they prohibit this. I think she is overreacting because she is jealous.
Am I the asshole here?

My STBX wife is not happy with my holiday plans. July 13, 2022
My STBX wife is not happy with my holiday plans.
My (M,31) wife (F,27) and I have been separated for about 6 months but not divorced (we were together for 10 years). We have 2 primary school aged boys. She has more custody than I do at the moment because of my work schedule but my aim is work towards joint custody.
We came to an agreement to split the school holidays between us, I the first week and her the second.
I had such a blast with the boys during my week playing games and watching movies with them at my new apartment. Just before my wife's week commenced, I asked if we could all do a few things together, go watch a movie, having a meal together etc. It would be nice for the boys to see their parents get along after all.
To my shock, my wife said that she had already booked a holiday for the boys and I would have no access to them for the entire week. Fortunately, my eldest boy told me that my wife had organised a cruise for them. To make things worse, it was the cruise that my wife and I talked about talking us when we were together. I was admittedly very hurt that my wife would take my dream family holiday without me.
Apart from my personal feelings, I was mainly concerned about the safety of taking 2 boys by herself. A lot can happen on a cruise ship. I didn't know if she is going be alone or with a boyfriend or a group, so my main goal is to ensure the safety of my boys.
I took time off work and also booked a cabin on that same ship (luckily there were plenty of vacancies). I don't want to be intrusive on my wife's time with the boys but I thought it was a sweet gesture that at least I can look after the boys while she gets a massage or wants some time alone. I even got a VIP cabin suite so the boys can have room to sleep over.
When I surprised her on the ship, she went apeshit ballistic at me. In fact she screeched so loud that security had to intervene and we were all interviewed separately by the head of security. The head of security seemed to immediately take my wife's side (white knight?) and told me to stay away from my family. But I mean, it's a ship? I've just been hanging in my room for the last few days but I'm not sure the direction from security is enforceable.
Obviously my wife has once again misinterpreted my nice gesture. I didn't go on the cruise to interrupt her trip, merely to make life easier for her to enjoy herself while spending time with the boys. Any advice for me?
**TD;LR** I booked a holiday similar to my wife's (separated) so I can hang out with my boys. She did not take it well.

2023.12.04 04:23 umaumai ADHD Manifesto

Hi DGGers,
Destiny hasn’t replied to my DMs asking to talk about ADHD on stream, and won’t look at many actually good ADHD resources on stream either. He also postulates a lot about many concepts covered here on stream, with no satisfying informational climax to finish the thought. I've been edging on this topic, and had enough, so I spent a couple hours this evening roughly transliterating 2 hours of this 3 hour seminar (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YSfCdBBqNXY&ab_channel=ADHDtips) on ADHD by Dr Russell Barkley (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russell_Barkley). I did this because holy shit so many of you still seem to think ADHD is some Tik Tok trend. Depending on the reception of this post I may or may not write a whole other thing about medications and treatments in further detail, especially because I read a lot of awful misinformation and concern trolling in stream chat and on here in regard to ADHD medications (mostly focused around the stimulant types). I don’t take any credit for the information below. Everything is from Russell Barkley’s work. It is a rough transcription of many of the key points in the video linked above. Note that this information is from the Barkley Model of ADHD. I typed all of this out because with such excellent and extensive video lectures it’s a hassle to pin timestamps to individual and important sections for reference in conversations with others.
I hope that even without writing out a description of the efficacy and safety record of medications, you will see by this description of the disability how serious a condition this is and get a grasp for why such measures aren't just a necessity, but are common sense. ADHD has worse life outcome statistics than GAD or depression and many other psychiatric disorders. If you read, you’ll see why. I don’t mention this because I want to engage in the disability Olympics, but because if you were a doubter, I want you to think “this is at least as serious as depression or GAD” the next time you see or hear ADHD. CBA to check for typos. Italicized quotes are direct quotes of Russell Barkley from the video, which I felt stressed important points.
Enjoy, nerds.

ADHD.
ADHD is a developmental disability, as opposed to a psychopathology like BPD, schizophrenia, major depression and ASD. This means the individual shows age-inappropriate behaviour, not aberrant behaviour. Psychopathologies can be identified at any age because of their nature, without a need to modify qualifying criteria for age, because they are grossly abnormal traits. A developmental disorder is a delay in attaining normal traits. Someone with ADHD will go through all the same stages of development as a ‘normal’ person, but not at the same rate, and when these traits reach their ultimate maturity (early 30’s for the brain), they will have plateaued far behind the norm. ADHD is different from ‘normal’ in a quantitative sense, not qualitative. It is like being taller and shorter than someone else, and there is no scientific evidence to back up any idea that ADHD minds are a qualitatively different human existence; there is no evidential basis to the notion that sufferers have any kind of compensatory ‘superpower’. The degree of the delay is the distinction.
What is delayed? Two traits. The first deficit to appear is inhibition; a failure to develop age-appropriate inhibition of your behaviour. Often emerges in pre-school settings, and the most common presentation is hyperactivity. For example, a child not suppressing superfluous behaviours in a way other children their age are able to do. Along with this is a cognitive impulsivity; a quickness to do or say the first thing that pops into your head, without due diligence. The external hyperactivity declines with age, and by adulthood becomes mostly an internal state of mind. Research shows external hyperactivity is of no diagnostic relevance in cases of adult ADHD, and is more associated with anxiety disorders by age 30. The real problem is not restlessness, but inhibition. Especially of emotions.
For the first 170 years of ADHD in medical literature (began 1798) emotional impulsiveness was a key component of ADHD. In 1976 the DSM removed this and made it an associated problem for some people. This is incorrect. It is as much a core feature as any other trait of ADHD. Emotional impulsiveness means quickness to anger, easily excitable, low frustration tolerance and to display your emotions much more quickly than those around you. Note, this is not part of a mood disorder, as in BPD. It is not ‘too much’ emotion. The degree of emotion is typical, but that you are not moderating it is not. It is an inability to self-soothe. You cannot be impulsive in your actions but not impulsive in your emotions, because they are intrinsically connected.
Because of this emotional dysregulation aspect, ADHD children are 11x more likely to develop Oppositional Defiant Disorder within two years of ADHD onset. In fact, everyone with ADHD is automatically sub-clinically ODD. Only one more symptom is required to cross the diagnostic threshold for ODD; environmentally acquired social conflict and anti-social behaviour.
50-70% are utterly rejected by their peers by 2nd grade. An inability to make and keep close and sustained friendships in childhood. This is one of the more devastating consequences of this disorder. Sleepovers, going to the movies and other celebrations of peer relationships are shut off for the ADHD child. The single best predictor of social rejection is emotional impulsiveness.
“Friends forgive you your distractibility, your forgetfulness, your working memory problems, and even your restlessness. They will not forgive your anger, your hostility, the quickness with which you emote to other people, because it is offensive.”
This is linked to road rage, job dismissals (which are predominantly due to quickness to anger, not distractibility) and it also explains marital and parental problems. The single greatest predictor of relationship problems in the adult with ADHD is not distractibility, it is emotion.
The second trait is a failure to develop on schedule, often called the attention deficit aspect, but it isn’t a deficit of attention at all. There are at least 6 or 7 types of attention networks in the brain. They are not all disrupted by ADHD. Inattentiveness is diagnostically useless by itself, because the nature of the inattentiveness is what distinguishes an ADHD diagnosis. The type of inattentiveness produced by ADHD is distinct from that produced in all other disorders. It is most accurately described as a failure of persistence. This implies behaviour, motivation and the future. ADHD is not problem of perception or filtering or processing. ADHD is a failure to direct behaviour forward in time. We cannot persist towards delayed end points in time. Persistence is the first type of attention that is affected by ADHD, and the next is distraction. People with ADHD do not perceive more distractors than any other person, but they respond to them more readily. Again, the inhibitory factor appears here, rather than any perceptual differences. Two people can hear a noise, and the person with ADHD is compelled to react to it.
A third aspect is not one of attention, but working memory. There is a working memory disorder, and working memory is one of the five executive functions of the human brain. This suggests ADHD is really EFDD (Executive Function Deficit Disorder). Working memory is the act of holding in mind the what, the when and the why of what we are doing. It’s what you begin to lose in old age and menopause. You do not lose memory, you lose working memory. This is what ADHD sufferers lose. Persistence towards the future, resistance towards distractions along the way, and working memory problems are the cornerstones of attentional abnormalities in ADHD.
There is yet more to ADHD than just the above-mentioned inhibitory and attentional failures. At it’s heart, it is a disorder of self-regulation, not attention. ADHD is misnamed, and because of this it is overly pilloried in the media as a minor issue of just not wanting to focus. A disorder of self-regulation is a serious disorder; as serious as manic depression, and in it’s own way, as ASD. The seriousness of this deficit of self-regulation, such a key trait in human psychology, is often entirely misunderstood and understated. This is a profound disability.
An ADHD child is not just inattentive, they cannot stop an engage in a series of self-directed actions that they can use to moderate or modify their behaviour, to bring it in line with their long term welfare. One of the most profound insights from research on ADHD is that self-control is NOT a result of your upbringing or how good your parents were; it is not learned. ADHD is a largely neurogenetic disorder, and if so, self-control is largely neurogenetic in origin. The vast majority of differences between any individual’s ability to manage their behaviour is NOT from how they were raised. It is a part of who they are; it is an inherited biological feature, like hair color. This doesn’t mean that training and coaching can’t help or enhance these aspects, but that these do not originate from the lack of training
Here are the key areas of executive function that are deficit in someone with ADHD:
  1. The ability to pause. We can’t stop. We can’t wait.
  2. The mind’s eye. Visualising the (relevant) past. Hindsight and foresight. We are not looking ahead, because we are not looking back either. We will not learn from the past to plan a future action.
  3. The mind’s voice. By age 5, children are starting to internalize their speech. This ‘voice in your head’ is vital to self-control and self-directed actions.
  4. The mind’s heart. Self-motivation; the ability to manage emotions so that they are consistent with your goals and not conflicting with your welfare. More profoundly, our emotions are our motivations. If we cannot manage our emotions, we cannot manage our motivations. Someone with ADHD will always be dependent on the environment around them and the IMMEDIATE consequences for how hard and how long they can work. If there are not consequences, no work will happen. This is why a person with ADHD can play video games for hours but not do homework for 5 minutes. Video games provide internal, continuous consequences for interacting with it. When a problem is solved on a sheet of paper, nothing happens. The consequences are delayed. This aspect is neither willful nor a choice.
  5. The mind’s playground. The ability to plan and solve. Simulating multiple possible future options is the highest executive function in humans. It is the source of all cultural innovation, but it originates in problem-solving.
These are the 5 key aspects of executive functioning that are permanently and severely delayed in someone with ADHD. The combination of the above renders an individual unable to experience time in a proper fashion; time-blindness. No amount of external nagging will make someone with ADHD use and apply their mind’s voice to self-monitor and self-motivate their actions, because their mind’s voice isn’t working. Compared to the DSM description, which is a superficial simplification, these 5 deficits are the real heart of what ADHD is.
Although there are subtypes in the DSM for ADHD (inattentive, hyperactive and combined) these subtypes are diagnostically useless so far as treatment approaches and the variance of an individuals symptoms over their life will oscillate between these ranges. The most relevant proposed typing of ADHD, from a treatment perspective, is ADHD with or without Conduct Disorder. In ADHD with CD, there will be severely anti-social behaviours that persist into adulthood and these individuals carry a high risk of psychopathy. One in five children with ADHD with CD is a budding psychopath. ADHD does not contribute to psychopathy, but ADHD with CD is the single best predictor of psychopathy in psychiatry. This ADHD with or without CD distinction is more common in Europe than North America. 90% of all cases of ADHD will go on to develop the combined type, and even if they do not, they are only one symptom short. 30-50% of children that supposedly have the inattentive type may actually have an entirely new disorder called SCT (Sluggish Cognitive Tempo), though research on this is ongoing and the nomenclature has been changed to CDS (Cognitive Disengagement Syndrome) due to the offensiveness of the original name. ADHD is the only attention disorder in the DSM, so other potential types of attention disorders are diagnosed under that umbrella. A key difference between the two is that SCT/CDS sufferers show lethargy, drowsiness, shyness, social reticence and withdrawal, which is not present in ADHD, and they do not have an inhibition disorder or the 5 executive deficits listed above. SCT/CDS sufferers have a problem with accuracy of school work, whereas ADHD sufferers don’t do any school work. The medications for ADHD do not work very well on SCT/CDS patients; only 20% of SCT/CDS patients stay on their medication after trial, compared to 92% for ADHD patients.
Therapies containing the construct of talking to oneself, such as CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy), broadly fail those with ADHD, because their mind’s voice is not developed as well. Cognitive training only begins to help in later adulthood (when paired with medication) but will still never work as effectively as in non-ADHD sufferers.
What causes ADHD? Lots of things, but all of them are biological. You cannot socialize someone into having ADHD. However, the impairments are a construct of our social environments, and these environments can be rearranged to be less impairing. Co-morbidities of ADHD do have some social causation, however; Conduct Disorder, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Anxiety Disorder and Depression all have social contributory factors. 40-50% of the variation in these disorders is the social environment. While the social environment does not cause ADHD, it is still relevant to keep in mind because of all the potential co-morbidities that are linked to it. A third of ADHD is acquired, and not genetic. This acquisition happens during pregnancy, from alcohol consumption, smoking and other typical factors that disrupt the development of the frontal lobe of the brain. 5% of ADHD cases are acquired through brain trauma sustained after birth. Lead poisoning, strep bacteria and leukemia treatments can also cause ADHD.
The following are the brain regions that give rise to hereditary ADHD and in 2/3rds of children with hereditary ADHD these regions are smaller; the Orbital-Prefrontal Cortex (primarily right side), the Basal Ganglia, the Cerebellum, the Corpus Callosum and the Anterior Cingulate Cortex (where the emotional dysregulation originates). The size of these networks are directly related to the severity of ADHD. For children with ADHD, the size of these regions are 3% to 10% smaller. That small size difference is all that is required to attain ADHD, but importantly is not large enough to use brain imaging for diagnosis. These differences are so small and so subtle that no brain imaging techniques can be used. Size differences will normalize around age 16 to 18, but the functionality of these regions will not. Research has found that the non-ADHD parents and siblings of someone with ADHD also have smaller neural networks of these parts of the brain, with one exception: the cerebellum; of all of these differences, most of them are part of the family phenotype, even if the family member never shows ADHD symptoms. The frontal lobe regions, including areas responsible for vision (see executive function deficit 2) of the brain is delayed in its growth by 2-3 years. Regions responsible for motor movement develop too early, hence the external hyperactivity associated with ADHD. ADHD runs in families. If a child had ADHD, 25-35% of their siblings will have it. For identical twins, this risk is 78-92%. 20% of mothers of ADHD children will still present as having ADHD, as will 33% of their fathers. Combined, this means there is a ~50% chance that one of the parents of a child with ADHD also has it. If you’re an adult with ADHD, 40-50% of your children will have the disorder. On average, twin studies have shown the genetic component which explains the variance of ADHD symptoms is around 80%, with some studies showing as strong a link as for human height (91-95%+). Twin studies allow researchers to explore how much of a trait is due to the rearing environment and for ADHD this number is 0. All twin studies have shown that the rearing environment has no influence on this trait. ‘Bad parenting’ is debunked as a cause for ADHD.
ADHD genes have been discovered with more success than genes for any other disorder in psychiatry. Most of these genes are related to the regulation of dopamine. This means that psychopharmacology is, in effect, a form of genetic treatment as it changes the behaviour of these genes. It’s not a band-aid or a cover-up, it is literally helping to manage the underlying genetic problems in the brain. 100 studies a year are published on gene research on ADHD alone. The takeaway here is that TV and media and video games or any other environmental influence cannot and do not cause ADHD. There is, in fact, no evidence that human attention spans have changed at all. What has changed, is the quantity of media that you risk being distracted by if you so choose (or can’t resist, in the case of ADHD). People with ADHD do have much more screen time than those without, but this doesn’t mean that screen time causes ADHD. The causation is inverse; ADHD causes susceptibility to these distractions. Food additives do not cause ADHD but ~20% of ADHD children’s symptoms are very, very slightly worsened by certain additives.
ADHD is time-blindness. The inability to look back, to look ahead, to get ready for what is coming at you. The individual with ADHD is living in the now, with a near-sightedness to the future. The further out the event lies, the less capable they are of dealing with it, leading to a life which is one procrastination induced crisis after another. One of the most devastating effects of ADHD which is most impactful for adults is a disruption in their sense of the fabric of time. People with ADHD cannot hierarchically organize behaviour; think decision trees or pyramid planning.
“The ability to look ahead is called intention, so ADHD is actually IDD. It’s Intention Deficit Disorder, because it doesn’t matter what your intentions are, you aren’t going to do them.”
“Your brain can be split into two pieces. The back part is where you acquire knowledge, the front part is where you use it. The back part is knowledge, the front part is performance. ADHD, like a meat cleaver, just split your brain in half. So it doesn’t matter what you know, you won’t use it.”
ADHD is a disorder and deficit of performance, not of skills.
What to do about ADHD, then? First, stop trying to teach so many skills. Summer camps, seminars, that sort of thing. ADHD individuals do not have a problem with their skills, but with using them. Changing the point of performance is what is key. All treatment, if it is going to work at all, must be at the point of performance; the place in your life where you’re not using what you already know. The only treatments that work are those that modify the natural points in the environment where the performance problems arise. These observations do not mean that people with ADHD have an excuse for their bad behaviours. ADHD is NOT a problem of consequences; it is a problem of time. It is the delay to consequence that disables the ADHD individual. This means an increase of accountability, not a decrease, is fundamental to controlling ADHD symptoms. Lesser or no accountability will make this disorder worse, not better. The way lists, memos, notes, rotas and queue cards work for an ADHD child is not because they are teaching organizational skills (again, ADHDers cannot perform skills well), but because they sprinkle artificial consequences into delays in the natural environment in order to increase accountability. Most parents and most teachers wrongly think that behavioural modifications like these are for their instructional value.
“That’s why whenever you go into a school and try teach a teacher on how to set up a token system, the first question out of his mouth are ‘how long do I have to do this? When will he internalize the program?’ and my answer is, ‘Never. As long as he is in your class, you will have to arrange artificial consequences to arrange the delayed ones and if you don’t do that he will not work for you’.”
Think of a ramp for wheelchair access into a building. Would you ever say to someone who needed this accommodation, after 30 days of successfully using the ramp, have they yet internalized the ramp and can it be taken away? The ramp is a prosthesis, an artificial means of reducing the disabling consequences of your disorder, and so are behavioural modification techniques for the ADHD person. No amount of using a ramp will stop the ramp being necessary, and no amount of behavioural modifications will stop the ongoing and persistent need for them. Treatments of ADHD are focused on prevention of secondary harms. We don’t treat diabetes to get rid of it, we treat it prevent what will happen to you if you don’t treat it.
Good approaches for someone with ADHD:
  1. Someone with ADHD cannot stop and keep what they were doing in mind. So don’t make them. Posters, sticky notes, lists, memos. Externalize the role that working memory fulfills in a normal brain and keep these within the visual field. If you’re an adult with ADHD you should not be going anywhere without a small notepad and pen; and anything you agree to do must be immediately written down in your pad. This is your substitute for your lack of working memory. Weld it to your body. Physical writing is better than digital devices because the latter are often forgotten, not charged, not switched on, and many other things. Minimize the potential points of failure.
  2. You have no internal clock. If anything is time-sensitive, you need to have a timer. You can buy vibration devices like wristbands that just vibrate slightly every 5 minutes to remind you of time passing. If the task which is time sensitive is more than half an hour removed from you, you will need a day planner. You will and should become timer and calendar dependent. You cannot see the future coming at you. Break the future into pieces; if you have a book report due next week, read three pages today and write four sentences today. Again tomorrow. Do not imagine or rely on doing something in the future, because you can’t see the future. Think E-R-O. Events coming at you. Responses you prepare. Outcomes of what you’re doing. Keep the E-R-O’s together, and that is your frontal lobe. The moment you stretch them apart, with gaps of time, you are disabled.
  3. All motivation for you is external. ADHD children do not have internal motivation, and providing external motivation does not pervert motivation or provoke a sense of bribery. Being a good citizen for the sake of being a good citizen will never work for the ADHD child. The ADHD child is Donald Trump incarnate and there had better be a deal. Points, tokens, privileges, whatever works.
  4. Mental play is the ability to manipulate the contents of your mind in creative ways. People with ADHD can’t do this as well as others. They can’t do mental arithmetic as well as others, and they can’t do digit spans backwards as well as others. If you can’t hold things in working memory as well, then you can’t manipulate those things either. That’s where the source of planning and problem solving comes from. So, again, externalize. Math with your hands, marbles, an abacus, a calculator. In the case of a writing task: take a stack of 3x5 file cards, and put your mind on dump. Write a thought per card. Whatever order, doesn’t matter. Sort them into order afterwards and you have the framing of your writing assignment. Make the mental information physical, in some way. This is why more people with ADHD end up in the trades than any other profession; it is not because they have less education but because it’s manual.
  5. ADHD rarely occurs alone. 80% of ADHD children and adults will have a comorbid disorder and 50%+ will have at least two. Seeing ADHD by itself is actually incredibly rare. The necessity of treatment of more than one disorder is incredibly common. Included in these comorbidities are depression, GAD, OCD, ODD, Conduct Disorder, learning disabilities, language disabilities, fine and gross motor difficulties and tic disorders. ADHD is also, of course, a strong predictor of alcohol and substance abuse, and the age of onset is earlier.
Now, how far behind, developmentally, is a person with ADHD compared to someone who is neurotypical? The average ADHD sufferer is 30% behind the norm for their age. Some are even more. If your child is 10, they have the self-control of a 7 year old. That is how long they can persist, how long they can remember and how long they can go without supervision. Their ability to self-organize is that of a 7 year old. How would you arrange tasks and homework for a 7 year old? You would not allow as much responsibility and freedom to a 7 year old as to a 10 year old, so do not do this with an ADHD child. Lower expectations to this Executive Age. The ADHD person’s self-regulatory age is 30% lower and it never, ever catches up and plateaus earlier. A 16 year old with ADHD getting their first driver’s license? Congratulations, you just gave an 11 year old a car. You might have an 18 year old ready to go onto college but their Executive Age is 12. How would you have to design a campus or curriculum if 12 year olds were showing up to go to school there? Those are the accommodations that someone with ADHD needs in order to thrive. This means more hand-holding, more accountability, more reporting to student services, more curriculum materials, studying in groups with older and more competent students, assigning them to a substance-free dorm. What usually happens? They get sent off to college and immediately fail the first semester. When it comes to making accommodations for people with ADHD you have to think about their Executive Age and not their Chronological Age. The 30% rule applies to everything.
“’I have a 14 year old daughter with ADHD, should she be allowed to babysit?’ Are you crazy? This is a 9 year old being in care of an infant.”
This isn’t hypothetical. There are legal cases of people even into their late teens and early 20’s who have killed babies out of anger, impatience, immaturity and not knowing what to do when the baby got upset and their unregulated emotions came to the forefront. Don’t go there. Look at all avenues of independence and apply the 30% rule.
Treatment:
Of course, evaluation and education are the starting point. Medication is the most effective thing we have. It doesn’t matter whether you like that or not, it is a statement of fact. We have no more effective intervention than these medications. Up to 80% of ADHD children will be on medication at some time in the developmental period. You cannot institute a psychosocial treatment when your child is driving and getting distracted. The medication, however, is always there in their system. Behavioural modifications are NOT as good as medications. This is why medication is on the increase and it is completely rational for this to be the case.
Now, let’s look at the consequences of untreated ADHD (Some statistics lifted from from https://chadd.org/about-adhd/long-term-outcomes/):
Educational Outcomes
32.2% of students with the combined type of ADHD drop out of high school, compared to 15% of teens with no psychiatric disorder (Breslau et al. 2011).
Between 2% and 8% of college students are estimated to have ADHD (DuPaul et al. 2009). The National Center for Education Statistics estimates that there were 20,642,819 students enrolled in college in 2012 (US NCES, 2014). If 2%–8% of this population is estimated to have ADHD, then between 412,856 and 1,651,425 students with ADHD enrolled in college in 2012.
A study by Kuriyan et al. (2013) found these outcomes for young adults diagnosed with ADHD:
Occupational Outcomes
The study by Kuriyan et al. (2013) also found these occupational outcomes for young adults with ADHD between the ages of 23 and 32:
The serious impact of failing to treat ADHD continues throughout adulthood. Adults with unmedicated ADHD are 78% more likely to be addicted to tobacco and 58% more likely to use illegal drugs than those without ADHD.
~79% of adults with ADHD who were not treated as children experience symptoms of anxiety, depression, and physical ailments compared with 51% of adults without ADHD.
Driving
In-vehicle distraction is, more recently, becoming or has become the single biggest cause of motor accidents, and the susceptibility of those with ADHD to these risks is obvious. More speeding tickets, more accidents, multiple accidents, worse accidents, licenses suspended 3x more often than other people. There is no known disorder that impairs driving to the degree that ADHD does. The Canadian Pediatric Association has gone on record to say that if you have a teenager who has even moderate ADHD, you have to medicate them. This advice holds true for adults with ADHD also. Untreated, ADHD drivers are a deadly risk to themselves and everyone else on the road. It happens.
Managing Money
Credit cards, car loans, debt. Of course, in a self-regulatory disorder, ADHD individuals need much more accountability in their financial management because they are at much higher risk of the penalties associated with falling behind on their scheduled payments, are their impulsivity greatly predisposes them into getting into difficult monetary situations in the first place.
Social Problems
Problems maintaining relationships. Experience more dating and marital problems. Much higher rates of divorce.
Sexuality
Sexual disorders are not more common in those with ADHD, but riskier behavior certainly is. Having intercourse a year earlier on average than other peers, having more partners because they cannot sustain dating relationships as long, not using contraception because of impulsivity. All these lead to a 10x increase in teenage pregnancy. There is no known better predictor of teenage pregnancy than ADHD. 32% of boys have fathered a child by age 19 and 68% of girls have been pregnant at least once by age 19. ADHD predisposes you to becoming a parent at a very young age, and this is often seen in the parents of the ADHD youths as well, and that is because the parents also had ADHD. 4x increase in STDs.
Life Expectancy
Untreated ADHD is associated with an all-cause mortality risk that reduces average life expectancy by ~13 years.
There is no domain of life that is free of the influence of ADHD. This is why treatment is usually lifelong and is especially important during adolescent years. Childhood only treatment is useless in the sense of changing the long term outcomes listed above. Some people do ‘grow out’ of childhood ADHD, but many do not. If you need treatment in your early 20’s, you will need it for the rest of your life.
“You do not get to design your children. Nature would never have permitted that to happen. Evolution would not have allowed a generation of a species to be so influenced by the previous generation. It hasn’t happened, and it doesn’t happen and it especially doesn’t happen in children. You do not design your children, and yet we have the Mozart Effect… … You don’t get that degree of power… … Your child is not a blank slate on which you get to write.”
